What do you do when the pops are wrong within a particular reg set on a coin just added?

Roll your eyes and groan -- 'bout all we can do, I think. --- Hard to prove pops (well, probably fully impossible) so all we can do is view them as a relative guideline. Newly graded coins take extra time to show up in the population numbers, and there are endless amounts of crackouts to crossover or regrade that certainly skew the numbers - there SHOULD be a mechanism to voluntarily submit the cert tags back to the TPG company to remove that coin from the population - I don't know if such a mechanism actually is in place, but I do feel safe in saying that virtually nobody is actively trying to utilize it.
@oldsmagnet Ok, thanks for that. I have noticed in passing on some sets that have top pop coins in them but the pop higher is way out of line like 800 or something. Must be a glitch in the Reg software...
They fix these things I hope!
Anyone can return the certs of coins they crack or cross, problem is few actually do that. Some feel it is appropriate to continue using those old certs in the prior TPG registry, some think it will help at time of resale, some like to think they are sticking it to the other TPG, and several other reasons I'm sure.
What I wonder is; given the current ownership doesn't seem to focus on the registry much; if there is anyone at PCGS that would even take the time to remove returned certs anyway.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
Is there maybe some confusion between the Pop Higher and Total Pop Higher? As an example, coins with First Strike designations, or proofs that are not DCAMs, etc, will have their own sub-division within that coin's listings - so you might find an PR68 that is the highest ranked of the non-DCAMs, and will show the extra point or two for that, although there may be hundreds of higher ranked DCAMs of the same coin. I've seen a random few examples like this. Although, there's also no shortage of registry glitches either, so, it could go either way LOL
I'd wondered if that was an option - I've never seen it in print anywhere.
Bingo - there's the second big issue -- although in fairness, it should qualify for all TPGs, I know I've got a good sized stack of NGC tags in my archive from crackouts and crossovers - I'll have to look into their procedures when I get some extra time
IMO those that do not return the tags are hurting themselves. Let's say a ms67 coin 5/0. Crack it out w/o sending the tag in. Gets the same grade, now a pop 6/0 coin Try it 4 or 5 times w/o the returned tags, now a 10/0 coin. NO, I don't play the crack out game. With my luck, it'd come back an ms66.
For what it's worth, all of my crackouts are to save the PCGS crossovers fees - 95% NGC, an odd ANACS or two in there probably too. I've never busted open a PCGS holder. The population inaccuracies there may hurt someone... but not me. LOL --- However, I do have one or two in my sets that are top pop with a pop of 2.... and I have both of them -- so I lose the extra point of having the "only" one ---- I wonder..... if I crack one of THOSE out and send in the tag, would I get that extra point??? LOL (kind of a petty d*ck move... and I don't think I could actually bring myself to do it, but in pure theory......
I always return labels from coins or medals cracked out. NGC might even still pay you for them if you are a member. I wish everyone would do this. PCGS and ANACS also accept returned labels.
If you have ANACS labels to turn in mail them to this address below. Customer service said no need for any membership or forms, and their IT department will remove them from active status when received.
