Laters brother...
PAC 12 has no one to blame but itself for its demise. Technically it still has 2 years to get back to 8 teams or more but thats not looking good. They want the Mountain West to join them to keep the name and the Mountain West so far is open to letting Oregon State and Washington State join them but not the other way.
But if someone made a movie about the demise of the PAC 12 people would say its unrealistic their decision making for over a decade was so bad. Texas and Oklahoma tried to join the conference about a decade or so ago and the PAC 12 said no and thought that two top 10 brands in the country were beneath them. Texas and Oklahoma obviously went to the SEC and when that happened the Big 12 was in trouble. They tried to merge with the Pac 12 to make a super conference but the PAC 12 voted no because they didnt want Baylor and TCU who are Christian Schools and they didnt want religious schools. Funny enough most of them are now in the same conference with them anyways. So the Big 12 pivoted and added 4 other schools got back on solid ground and signed a good TV deal.
The TV networks also offered basically the same deal to the PAC 12 as the Big 12 but the PAC 12 wanted SEC and B!G money and the networks just laughed in their face and that was the end of that. Then San Diego State tried to leave the Mountain West to join the Pac 12 and they said no again at the last second.
USC wanted out for a while and was leaving with UCLA no matter what. Oregon really wanted to be in the B!G and then the Big 12 poached the group they wanted and that was that. Its honestly insane how poorly that conference was managed and their decision making. Their voting on things was so bad that most of these schools in new conferences dont even have voting rights until the next TV deal is signed.
They were spending almost 10 million a year for a downtown SF conference headquarters when the SEC and B!G combined for about 1 million a year on theirs. Its crazy how they just made the wrong decision every step of the way. Its fitting though that Stanford and Cal who were often leaders in blocking things are now in the worst spot possible being in the ACC because no one else wanted them

when bill walton called games he'd say "conference of champions"
After further review my recordings are still safe...

They were the premier conference for Olympic sports and winning medals, particularly USC, UCLA, Stanford and Cal. Theyve held strong in that regard for the most part. Florida, Georgia, LSU and Kentucky had extremely strong showings at the last Olympics. Stanford had the most medals followed by USC, Florida was 3rd then UCLA and Cal tied for 4th. Kentucky was 5th and Georgia, LSU, Michigan and Texas tied for 6th in the Tokyo Olympics.

I moved to the SF Bay Area in 1986. For many years the PAC 12 headquarters were located in a run of the mill 4-5 story office building in Walnut Creek, Cal. situated about 3-4 blocks from my office. I always thought the reality of its headquarters did not equate to the high profile of the conference touted in the print and electronic media.
I wonder where Oregon State and Washington State will end up. Will they be the senior programs in a new PAC 8, 10, 12 or other sized conference; or will they be newly admitted members of the Mountain West conference or other conference?
Oregon State and Washington State will most likely end up in the Mountain West or as Independents. Conference USA got raided by the Big 12 when the BIG 12 needed to replace Texas and Oklahoma and no longer has really any value to TV networks. Sunbelt has some teams with value but they have no interest
Mountain West is really the only realistic shot to save the PAC 12 and theres no reason why the Mountain West would ditch its name and whatever legal implications for the TV deal to join them. Its not going to be considered a power conference even if they do get that to happen.
The one long shot for Oregon State and Washington State to get back in a power conference would be the ACC. FSU, UVA, UNC, and Clemson are all already furious about Stanford and Cal being added and are trying their best to get out of the conference by any way possible including multiple lawsuits and WSU and OSU could be replacements if they win.
SMU recently joined the ACC because they agreed to take no money until the next TV deal which is in like 14 years. If Washington State and Oregon State agreed to do the same they have a decent chance of getting approved

They didnt really join the conference. Theyre playing a Mountain West schedule as "part of" the conference, but no matter what they do they arent eligible for the conference championship.
Its really just a scheduling agreement the same way Notre Dame does

It's an interesting story for sure. They made some mistakes (most notable the Texas/OU thing) but also I just don't think the fans are as passionate out west by on large. Growing up a UCLA fan the fan base is nothing compared to Big 10, SEC, etc.... That lack of passion shows up in less butts in seats at games, lack of eye balls on TVs and less merch sales. Oregon and maybe U$C has passionate fans but not SEC level. UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Arizona, ASU, etc very low level fandom from my observation... and I am still a UCLA fan though it is difficult at times.
the real tragedy was they carried a lot of womens volleyball back in the day. The only college sport worth my time
Pac 12 media day was certainly something with the open bar to get reporters to come to 2 schools and a commissioner
