Registry Morgan Date Set: CAC missing/unavailable?

johnny010johnny010 Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hello
Knowing Morgan’s are up there when it comes to all time demand and collectibility, I’m baffled there is no Morgan Date Set CAC only available for registry.

Has anyone ever requested this set and been given a reason it’s not available?

About three years ago or so, shortly after PCGS Registry launched the CAC Composite Registry Sets, I used their tool to request roughly two dozen more. Initially, their shorthanded staff was tied up, but after a while it became clear what we had was all there was going to be.

Now that CACG is a grading competitor, I just can’t see any additional CAC Composite sets being added, but I wish that were not true.

I'm glad you answered this, has it been 3 years since we asked for many many sets for just CAC only only to fall on deaf ears. They found it necessary to add all the foreign sets instead for the past few years.

    Ok thanks
The logic on the site is inconsistent and I’ve almost completed a CAC date set only to find out there’s no proper registry for it.

Mike - As you may know, that’s EXACTLY what I did with my Morgan DATE set! See the hotlink below. I’m ok that it’s not ranked higher than #17, since I know how tough it was acquiring 28 eye appealing coins in moderately high grades where EVERY coin merited a CAC sticker!

In my set, not only does every coin have a CAC sticker, but 14 of the 28 coins have a Plus grade! Of the sets ranked higher, it appears there is only one that is 100% CAC, and that one is Current ranked #16, just ahead of my set. Kudo’s to @rihrig for his/her Eagle River’s Morgan CAC Date Set!

@winesteven amazing collection you’ve been able to acquire. Few questions

    1) Upgrades: are you planning to upgrade your 94-S and 95-S?
    2) Logic: would you pick a 67 CAC in a common date over a rare 66 CAC?
    3) Ranking: since you’ve pointed out you’re one of only two CAC sets in the top 17, would you be willing to move up in rank but sacrifice a CAC coin/s to get there?

    Thanks for your kind words!

Interesting questions. Keep in mind there are no "right" answers, as #2 and #3 are subjective questions.

    1. I am indeed looking to upgrade the 94-S from a 64+ to a 65, and the 95-S from a 64 to a 64+. I do NOT plan to upgrade to a grade higher than those. However, I've already seen a couple in those desired grades, but I was not happy with the eye appeal of those compared to mine (in my opinion). For me to pull the trigger, the new upgraded coin(s) would have to look nicer than the coin(s) being replaced.
    2. For my set, my personal preference is to buy the highest grade I feel comfortable spending on that slot, and that means paying for a more common mint than a tougher one in a lower grade. Many collectors feel otherwise, and that's OK.
    3. First, you may not believe this, but rank # is not important to me. When I start a set, I look at what coins would cost in certain grades for each slot, and decide what I'm comfortable spending for that set and those slots. Wherever that lands me in the rankings is fine with me. As an example, my Classic Silver Commem Type Set (54 coins) is currently ranked #13. About half the coins in my set are valued at 3 figures each. As such, it would be financially easy for me to upgrade many of those, and easily move higher in rank. I choose not to do that. With that said, there are three coins that I do indeed want to upgrade in that set, but for the past three years or so, I have not found any of those in a higher grade with nicer eye appeal (again, to me) than the three existing coins. Second, to ME it's important that a coin is solid for the whole grade number on the label (in the opinion of CAC), and has not had certain surface treatments that are acceptable to the TPG's, but unacceptable to CAC. So as you can see from the two points in this #3, my answer is no. Obviously, MANY collectors feel differently for their sets, and that's OK. Separately, I think it's actually perfectly OK for collectors to buy coins that have failed CAC, but they should try to understand WHY it failed, and if they're OK with that, that's good. Not every coin, especially those with lower values have been submitted to CAC, but in my opinion, coins of a higher value currently up for sale are much more likely to have been to CAC. For example, if YOU have a coin that you're selling that you know has never been to CAC, and you look at sale prices and see those coins that look like yours that have CAC stickers sell for several hundred dollars more than similar coins with no CAC stickers, wouldn't you see if you or an auction house can first submit it for $30 - $70 or so to see if it'll sticker? If no, then you very well might be leaving money on the table.

Thank you Steve for the detailed replies.

I recently couldn’t decide between two coins and wanted to see how you might handle given the fantastic coins you keep in your collection.
