Not a Carson City but it sure might be a Canton China example.

I contacted the seller... he didn't know that Carson City mint marked coins weren't struck until 1870s. Hopefully, this goes poof soon...

It's even before Nevada existed....I don't think Nevada was even a territory yet.

It's still running and up to seven bids now. Ebay says it can find nothing wrong with the auction.

I contacted the seller, and ebay... seriously?? We can't get an obvious fake removed??

I contacted the seller, heard back from him and believe he didn’t know the coins were counterfeit. He pulled the listings and I provided him with some information which will hopefully enable him to get a refund from the dealer who sold them to him.

Edited to add: Meanwhile, eBay’s response to my report was that they didn’t find any violation of their policy.

I looked at the other items this seller has for sale... appears to be one of those storage unit sellers that liquidates unclaimed units and coins aren't their primary interest. I'm glad these auctions got pulled...

I don’t know how their decisions are currently being made, but particularly in the case of a coin such as an “1845-CC $1” it’s pathetic - worse than at any time I can remember over the course of many years.

No, it's not. In figuring out how to navigate the new process of alerting ebay about counterfeit coins (and why they're fakes), I'm left with the impression that they're relying heavily on dropdown menus that don't include a specific option for "counterfeit coins" and unvetted AI. There are options to report "counterfeit bullion" and "replica coins" but not counterfeit coins. I submitted under both dropdown choices but both were kicked by AI as not violating ebay policy.

So, to see what would happen to bidders on this item... I bid. The only notification I received from ebay is that somehow my bids were cancelled on an item that didnt violate ebay policy. Clear as mud?

Hi Mark... I got the same response last night and saw the auction still up this morning. How many people have to notify ebay of a counterfeit before they acknowledge it and pull the auction. It seems, to me, that they are playing some sort of PR game in not acknowledging that their platform needs policing and everything is "happy happy". Then, to cancel my bids without any reason? Not a great way to do business... IMHO. I get that ebay is probably getting the most eyes on material, but you really need to know what you're looking at. Counterfeits are probably one of the biggest existential threats to the hobby and ebay doesn't seem to be helping... even though this particular auction got taken down.
