It's historical, assuming it's a legitimate contemporary counterstamp. It's not for everyone but some collectors would be interested.

I have an early 20th century US coin with a swastika counterstamp and a Standing Liberty quarter with a communist hammer and sickle hand-engraved on it.

I also have a quarter from the 1980s that has a counterstamp that is so disturbing that I would never post a photo or even describe it.

Counterstamp collectors don't necessarily endorse the messages on the coins they collect. It's about preserving history.

The 1920's were a period when the KKK was highly active in many parts of the country. This 1923 coin may have been some sort of local membership token. Items like this are disturbing but they are also historically interesting. The KKK of this period was not just anti-black but also very anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish.

That’s my take as well - likely a contemporary counterstamp. It is a part of history, akin to coins of the Third Reich, so yes, historically interesting and educational.

The bulges on the reverse pushed up by the punches show wear after the punching, so I am confident that the punches are contemporary to when the coin was in high grade.

Could it be debated that it is someone's initials? To defend the offering.

If it's someone's initials, it is worth less.

I suppose all artifacts of Nazi Germany and WW II Japan should be burned. We should probably destroy all antebellum artifacts as well as Stalinist material as well.

Roman coins are disturbing. We should ban them.

Any machinist/Toolmaker will have these number/letter punches. So, let’s take an old nickel, stamp KKK on it and sell it to some idiot thinking it’s the real deal. Just another scam to make money. Nothing new here.

That is so untrue. Our history is here for a reason; to remind us of what would happen if we repeat it and how do deal with it when it is repeated. If that was meant to be a joke it is a very, very dry one.

Sorry. But it was a point worth making amid all the hand wringing over the token.

Yes it was. I understand now. At the moment I was thinking that that might be kind of misleading to some people.

Actually, some people would absolutely agree with it and be willing to do it. Other people realize their triggers are different. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to the sins of the past.
