Junk Counterfeits

Are Chinese junk dollars commonly counterfeited? I assume that they are since they are Chinese, but I wanted to ask if there were any telltale signs of a fake before I buy one.

Just don't buy one. They are prolific and some are very good. I'd stay away.

Hey thanks for that. I'm going to hold off for now.

In my experience there are lots of them and there aren't general tells because they would otherwise get fixed.

There are telltale signs of bad fakes. But, obviously, the better fakes don't have those.

My favourite "tell" is on the cheap fake sun-and-birds junk dollars, where the sun-rays on one side of the ship don't line up with the rays on the other side:

Bad junk: the sun-ray doesn't line up. This coin is of course "bad " in numerous other ways too.

Better junk: the sun ray does line up (but it might still be fake).

Yea, but if the price is right it's still a nice coin for the grandkids

That is interesting, thanks for the tip.
