Ebay Sellers not sending coins from auctions... too low of a hammer price??
This past year I've been bidding on more raw coins to fill albums I've started. The auctions in question are generally from sellers with lower feedback numbers and the hammer price ended being more favorable to the buyer (me) and free shipping with (ostensibly) USPS Ground Advantage. In all cases, no tracking information was available. Case (s) in point:
1- around Christmas last year, I was the high bidder on an 1805 LC... looked to be VG details for ~$80. I waited a couple of days for the item to appear as "Shipped", but then waited around 10 days before filing an "Item not received" complaint to get my money back. I ended up getting a decent example for not a whole lot more so I didn't question it.
2- A few months ago, a similar thing happened with an 1802 (with stems) LC that looked to be more F12 with nice clean fields that hammered for ~$125. Same deal... it took the item a couple of days to be listed as "shipped" and then I ended up filing an "Item not received" complaint to get my money back about 10 days later. This time, the seller was from a zipcode not more than 10 miles away from me and stated that the other nine packages arrived OK. Just mine didn't...
3- My current "Item not Received"... I won an auction for a 1889 Liberty 5C in VF/XF condition for ~$25. I won the auction on the 16th, it took until the 19th to ship, and now I'm waiting on USPS Ground Advantage (free shipping) with no tracking...
Is this a trend that others are seeing? It's a bit odd that I've been on ebay for close to 20 years, and I've never encountered three non-delivered packages in such a short amount of time.

Interesting…as I have ordered THREE walkers in the past month for my senior mom. The first two were not delivered (the first one had a UPS ‘delivery verification photo’’ of an above ground swimming pool) and I actually received my money back quickly (one day) for the first and second and the third was just shipped….(supposedly) so we will see what happens. I too have been buying and selling for 30 years and never had this happen…..
Some sellers are probably underwater on some of the stuff they bought a couple years ago not realizing the market has softened. They’re reluctant to take a loss so they do this instead.

I considered that, but I don't want a retaliatory neg... and I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. I'll put them on my "Blocked" list of sellers, but I'm left to wonder if these people have alternate accounts where they can sell "previously sold" merch...

Get with the times.
Sellers can't give buyers negative feedback.
But I still try not to neg sellers.
eBay doesn't hold sellers accountable so they won't ship if they aren't happy with the price.
Neg them and move on. And yes, not shipping something you put up for auction is 100% grounds for a neg.
If they relist it, you can usually get a strike put on their account too. If they get 3 strikes in something like a year, they'll be NARUed.

I have had the same thing happen this year two times. Probably about that many in the past 20 years. I just figure it is people not knowing what they are doing.

Cool... Neg left on the 1802 LC...
I'll wait a few more days on the Liberty 5c...
I hope this doesn't become more of a trend... big waste of time for buyers.

Yes, give a big fat Neg. The seller has broken their contractrual agreement. Unethical and not a person to ever do business with. If the seller needs or wants a certain price, they can set a fixed price and let the coin languish on Ebay with the million other overpriced coins.
Pitiful.
I always send it anyway, just part of doing business. Just had one tonight, lost 150 on it. market is starting to soften hard on just stuff. Going forward , I use the info to adjust buying price for future purchaes. Funny thing is you mentioning about sellers not selling. Whenever i have something go cheap, I never get return requests on those sales
Message the seller and ask for tracking number.
They sent it, they should have a tracking number.
I've had sellers not send coins that were cherry picked. The coin somehow disappears, and the dealer cannot find it.
If they knew how good it was, why would they list it for a low price in the first place?

Do you know what a "cherry pick" is? It's an improperly identified coin that is worth much more than its description would suggest. They didn't know what they had when they listed the coin.
In these cases, they were SLH 1855/854 overdates identified as 55 normal dates. The seller or their assistant may spot the overdate while processing the coin. It's not difficult, but one has to look for it. I've helped sellers a time or two and told them what they had when I wasn't interested in a coin. I did it for market research. The guy immediately PM'ed back saying "Wow, you're right, Thanks!" Then they relisted the coin as the overdate and promptly sold it for 250% more than their original asking price. Nice data point!
I've also won at auction a coin for a very low price and the coin somehow gets lost. I cannot recall the coin, though. The lost "cherried" overdates I remember.
Edited for tense agreement.
I stand corrected on the 1802 LC... when I went back to the auction to leave the Neg, I saw that a tracking number was actually supplied... USPS never received the package. The current Liberty 5C is supposed to be getting here through USPS Ground Advantage... I thought that came with tracking but the tracking number isnt showing although the item has "shipped".

Ground advantage comes with tracking. But some people pay the postage at the post office which means they would manually have to input the number. Did you inquire?
Non- delivery is different than failure to ship. I'm confused about the actual problem. Did they have tracking numbers?
The 1802 LC actually did have a tracking number. The USPS never received the package. The current "coin-at-large"... the Liberty 5C says "USPS Ground Advantage" but there's no Tracking Number. The seller changed the status to "Shipped" three days after the auction ended. The 1805 LC also did not have Tracking...

In the old days a long time ago, you could get a phone number of the other party from eBay customer service if you were in the middle of a transaction.. Not sure if it's still true or not but you could give him a call to find out what's going on.

Still a lot of honest, decent sellers on Ebay for coins. Just move on from the bad ones. Sorry this happened to you.
Well, I heard back from the seller of the Lib 5c... items under $40 dont go ground advantage so there's no tracking. He indicated that shipping could take 4 to 14 days. Seems a bit long, but at least the seller got back to me. Hopefully this ends well...

I haven't had a seller not send an auction win, but i have had a seller block me after I won a few of their auctions with the opening bid. Like it's my fault nobody else bid.
Is it possible to create a second identity on eBay to buy a few more of his coins?

Speaking for just myself of course, but I don't have the temperament any longer to deal with Ebay. I closed my account. Prices often reflect the seller fees and I get sales tax added too. I use certain websites which I trust and am happy with that. I may miss some great stuff, but that's just my trip.
Well, at least the Liberty 5C arrived today... whew! This one made it through the sorting machine.

That is absurdly poor packaging. It's a surprise it did not get completely shredded in the machines.
The condition of the envelope explains the delay.
Is the date of the nickel embossed on the other side of the envelope?

I see roller marks on that envelope. CAC would not have approved.

Seriously, this is about the worst I've gotten... packing wise... in quite some time. Makes me wonder how the seller sends larger coins that hammer for less than $40. I can't imagine a Kennedy Half or a cull Silver dollar making the same trip.

It is. All you need is another email address.
And an alternate shipping address, I'm guessing.

Not necessarily... my son bought stuff off ebay. Different email, different account, same shipping address... also a different computer with a different IP address.

No. You can use the same shipping address
For the first two, sure... sellers buried in a coin and then wanting a "do over" when the auction results don't break their way. Never once have I had a coin fail to show up that I've paid strong money for. Only recently... within the last year.. have I had non shipments.
The Lib 5c doesn't fall into THAT category... but brings up an issue with smaller dollar items and shipping costs. I'm a collector... when i sell something to fund a different purchase, I take shipping and packaging to be part of the hobby. I'm not running, or even aspiring to run, a coin business. I understand about keeping costs low, but this is a bit ridiculous.
