@DeplorableDan thanks! And nice Bechtler. Do those tend to tone more vibrantly because the alloys were more variable? I figure that was the case with Latin American gold.

Variable alloys, yes, but mainly just the fact that there’s a higher silver content. Bechtlers in particular might have only been 20-21 carats fine, if that, so the filler metals tend to bring out more intense colors.

How does .9999 fine gold tone unless it is something laying on or struck into the surface?

I would have to think it's an incomplete rinse by the mint? I the case of Mary Lincoln above, I bought it from the mint and submitted it myself so I know nothing was done to it. It's in storage with a complete collection but only a handful from that era have that kind of toning.
I love threads like these… some gorgeous gold here.
