Is it time for 2 tiers for variety attribution?

davewesendavewesen Posts: 6,144 ✭✭✭✭✭

I ask this because some are easily seen with naked eye and some need research and investigation. It also seems that $45 is close to the least expensive route for grading and attribution.

So you are asking PCGS to add a more expensive option?

A special rate is needed for corroded and damaged Lincoln Memorial Cent varieties! ;)

I agree but they'll never do it. It would cost PCGS revenue.

Some of the varieties I collect are immediately apparent and some are not. If I want it recognized on the holder, I've got to pay the price. Otherwise, I know the attribution, I can choose not to have it, it's still on the coin.

There are already two tiers. The "best" varieties (from the Cherrypicker's Guide, mainly) have their own PCGS numbers and need no extra fees for attribution.

they all have PCGS numbers - are you referring to the Official Red Book listed varieties?

I have had nonattributed pcgs coins that I tried to sell at Coin shows. Nobody would offer above basic coin values for them. If you want variety prices/value, have them attributed and then we'll talk.

I think it would just be preferred that attribution services get things right on the first go. That's the only thing that I would prefer.

It does take a lot of work to determine the parking lot a coin was run over in.

If I request a variety attribution, I always know exactly what I have (often better than just about anyone else, lol). I'd personally like to see confirmation for a cheaper price, versus the research price, but alas...it won't happen.

ANACS already has this. If CACG starts doing this, PCGS will likely follow.

Hope so...it'll lead to more being attributed.

There is a widely accepted alternative to their attributions, of course. ;)

I'm pretty sure CACG does do this. $5 discount I think?

It would be fabulous if the registry people were on the ball about that too. But I had to reholder and pay for attribution to go from an already 1800 Dotted Date dollar to 1800 BB-94 Dotted Date in order to admit it into my Early Dollar variety set. Actually, still waiting on it to be done .... along with the shipping costs. That is but one example. They all seem like nice folks, but this makes my blood boil. All they need to do is allow that other PCGS number for slot admission into the set as well. Maybe it is corporate greed? Probably not. The number of affected registry players hardly represent a windfall. It is an unnecessary annoyance. Same with 1798 Small Eagle 15 Stars (BB-81) and so many others.

To be fair, your book cost me a few dollars for the same reason ;)B)

$10 discount. I knew they were either doing it or about to start. Pressure's on PCGS now.

When I submit my Large Cents for attribution I already know what Newcomb Variety it is. I didn't realize I could just check the box and let PCGS figure out which of the 45 varieties my 1851 LC is for example.
I enjoy figuring out the variety and like what CACG says.."We respect our submitter's knowledge and want to reward them appropriately." Time is $$ and saving the graders time should save me $$.
I doubt this will ever happen...I even get charged $20 on cross overs that are attributed by NGC and ANACS......oh well.

I did not realize it was happening at other grading services, ++++
