Washington Quarters Illinois and Salt River Bay Errors?

First glance I said PMD! Then I noticed the distorted lettering on the Salt River Bay. The Illinois weighs 5.2 and the Salt River 5.4, the picture with the coins flattened out, shows a weird taper on the Illinois ( coin on right is a normal States coin) The only thing close on error Ref was Die Deterioration Deformation Error. So I’m reaching out for further education please!

Your first impression was correct – they’re damaged after being in circulation

That's an excellent thing to notice. Now, describe how lettering could be distorted in the minting process in a way that matches the distortion you see here.
When you find something that is not possible in the normal minting process, you have already determined that it cannot be an error.
There has been a lot of modern quarters lately with heat damage. Someone may be experimenting trying to separate the layers. Just a thought.
