FS on GC: 1971-S Proof IKE DDR FS-801
About 3 years ago I cherry picked a raw 71-S proof Ike DDR FS-801 on eBay. This is one of about two dozen graded by all TPGs. I had not planned to turn loose of it, but life has stepped in and said SELL. A family member's health necessitates a caregiver so here we are. You can view the GC listing here:
The coin was in the original plastic holder with one corner of the holder chipped when I bought it. I sent it raw this way to GC to protect it, and they assumed I wanted it graded in the original holder, which PCGS did despite the chipped corner. The True View is horrible, so I asked GC to send it back for placement in a proper holder and a new photo. Unfortunately, the original True View photo is still showing up, but GC has posted a nice GreatPhoto image.
The coin is graded PR68 with no CAM or DCAM designation. While I believe it deserves a CAM designation when comparing it to other FS-801s, the lack of this designation actually places this coin in a unique position as the only Ike with the PCGS # prefix of 510589. I am not a registry person, but if I understand right, this may give it "top pop" standing and registry bonus points even though there are PR69s with cameo designations. If this is incorrect, please correct me.
There was an earlier discussion on the Ike Group forum identifying and comparing die marks on this and other FS-801s. The sister coin to this one with regards to die marks is graded PR68CAM.
The auction ends Sunday evening, June 24, 2024, so check it out and good luck...bid often and bid high!

Correction, June 23, 2024, my bad.
Congrats on a cool cherry-pick! I believe you are incorrect on the bonus registry points theory for a non-cameo in a grade where there are cams, dcam’s and higher graded coins. Nonetheless, a fabulous find on eBay for what I assume was “peanuts”. Well done!

One bump going into the final weekend before this auction ends. If you are an Ike collector, you know these only come up once or twice a year, so now is your opportunity.
Thanks, Wondercoin for the correction, I think I must have misinterpreted something I had read.
Great cherry-pick! In the old days here you would get a “YOU SUCK” award!!
I think I helped your price by about $2,500.00 in winning the coin. I’ll outbid Anyone for the great Ikes I like!! This variety is perhaps the coolest Ike variety in existence (not counting the pattern? Ty 1 Proof 71-S Ike). So under-appreciated at the present time!

Thanks, appreciated, and congratulations. Figured you or SP would end up with it. I have others you might be interested in, I may PM you before long.
most eBay pics are too poor, or not even the coin you will get on low-end stuff. Congrats on the pick-up ++++

Feel free to give me a call any time you desire to talk coins at (310) 598-2330. You call CA, but it rings through to me wherever I am located in the world (at the moment in Yokohama, Japan). It’s a slow day here - not sure I want to see Phantom of the Opera performed in Japanese, but it is right across the street from my hotel! 🤣
