2024 Platinum Eagles?

jmski52jmski52 Posts: 22,865 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just checked the Mint production log and there haven't been any regular issue Platinum Eagles minted yet.

Has there been any kind of announcement regarding production of the 2024 Plats?

Not sure, but I know that they have a minuscule amount of demand in the secondary market so I wouldn’t be surprised if they scaled back or reduced the mintage.

I believe that the mint stopped producing bullion platinum eagles starting 2024 and that 2023 was the final year of bullion coin production. The higher premium resulted in much lower demand in 2023.

They are getting to be like proof and Unc sets…..with such a ridiculous premium that no one wants them with shabby quality control. In six months to a year later (and sometimes sooner) you can get them for way less than the mint is selling them for. Just not worth buying one to ‘hope’ it’s going to be a key date….

I had not heard that the platinum bullion program had permanently ended in 2023, and if this is true, why did the mint list them on the 2024 bullion sales page?

The mint premiums on platinum bullion are somewhere around 6-13%, which has been very reasonable.

Cannot guarantee it is 'current/correct', but the publicly available documentation for AP's says:

    Source: https://www.usmint.gov/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/AP-Criteria-Gold-Platinum-Palladium-Bullion.pdf

Have no meaningful insight into how much the AP's are marking it up.

I’m referring to the bullion issue - not the proofs.

I agree. For platinum, that premium range isn’t unusual nor is it unreasonable.

Same here. That’s why I’m asking about the 2024 bullion issue. Platinum is starting to show some signs of life and the fundamentals are swinging back in platinum’s favor.

I e-mailed the Mint, and asked if they planned to produce any 2024 bullion APtE coins.

They just responded. Here is a screenshot:

Thank you, MetroD. I just updated the mintages for Plats. It looks like they over-produced in 2021 & 2022, then tapered off production in 2023. Looks like they are/were over-stocked.

The Mint skipped another year - 2015 - for their regular issue Uncs as well. I was hoping to get a roll of new Plats before the price goes way up. Oh well, maybe next year.
