In all my years collecting I've never owned a Roman coin. This changed today when I received the following coin in hand.
Septimius Severus
AD 193-211
AR Denarius
Mars advancing
NGC Ch AU
Strike 4/5
Surface 4/5
Probably overpaid but a beautiful coin in hand.
Sellers photos.
If anyone else has more info on this 'Mars' coin please feel free to share below.
Peace

Nice coin, Septimius Severus is the first emperor I bought that got me into ancients too.
Thanks bronzemat, looking forward to learning more about the series.
Peace
Cool! I like that!
I'm BACK!!! Used to be Billet7 on the old forum.
I choose to honor this emperor's memory by collecting his bronzes. The imperial series are a bit pricey, but the provincials are affordable and incredibly varied. From Markianopolis in Moesia Inferior:

You won't have much choice but to overpay for slabbed ancients. But this era (the Severans) is pretty good value with a mix of decent quality and lower prices. Before this gets expensive, while afterwards the quality drops until the Tetrarchy.
Yes. Nice toned SeptSev, there.
A respectable first Roman. Most people start with a cheap late Roman bronze or two.
One I used to have:
