big sale on a Brett rookie

there are a handful of cards I loosely keep track of, about monthly I will go back and look at sales data for them. the 3 brett rookies are some of those cards. I was checking out 130point this morning and saw that PWCC auctioned off a psa 9 Topps Brett at the beginning of May and it finished at $7800. that is a really huge price for the Brett. I dont remember of any going that high during the pandemic. they have been hovering around $5k lately, a few hundred below or above. It was a really nice example, but man, that was a big price.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Thanks for the info. Ryan PSA 9's go for about the same or more, so not a huge surprise that a Brett Rookie would catch up to that. 1975 my fav set!!

1975 topps PSA 9 Ryans sell for $7k? I had no idea they were that valuable. I would have assumed the Brett rookie to be the top dog in that set.

Now that Fanatics owns PWCC, I wouldn’t be so sure that this still goes on. The PWCC name is rumored to go the way of the dodo in an announcement at The National. It was a beautiful 9. Think this was just a case of strong for the grade.

Interesting. This one on MySlabs is more in line with what you’ve seen. $5,750 and open to offers. It has a slight tilt the other one doesn’t though.

It does present nicer than the grade.

I am VERY happy to read about that 9 getting $7K, and hope that is the new price on those.

I have a 9 that I got by cracking one from a different company and sending it to PSA. Never had that kind of luck since.

The days of cracking and sending to PSA for a higher grade feel like they're over and never coming back...

It definitely helps to crack out before sending to PSA...another company's grade is an influencer.

I used to have an Aaron #660 PSA 9 years ago that I paid $800 for when I was building a PSA set. Had a Brett PSA 9 also. Somebody on here said the other day an Aaron went for 8k. Mine was beautiful too, pop at that time was like 21 in PSA 9. I thought it would go down in value as the pop increased. Sold it years ago probably got about what I paid for it and got $500 for the Brett which was pack pulled by me. 😫

Appreciate you sharing that. At times I’ve thought about buying an SGC/Beckett card at a show and wondered what PSA would do if I sent it in the holder as opposed to raw.

oh no, $500 for a psa 9 Brett. that one must hurt. especially for a Brett fan. there are certainly some that I let go of too soon as well. those are the ones that sting.

Looking at what the PSA 10 went for at Heritage $150k - I think the PWCC Brett is nicer. Can totally see two people comparing that card to the Heritage one and be willing to pay that.

    Super-nice.

I went through a bit of a 75 Brett-buying phase a few years ago and have about half a dozen including a mini that's at PSA right now. All 7s, 8s and the one 9.

For me it was the card when I was a kid that I couldn't afford but it was also the coolest to have since he was such a huge star in the 80s. Somehow I finally filled that emotional void but it took many cards to do it. :D

Nice…. If you want post some pics of those bad boys!
Years and years ago there was an ad in SCD from a dealer selling raw Brett rookies for $50 each. I think he listed them NM. Can’t remember who the dealer was. I bought 5 and when they arrived I was happy with how they looked. Back then PSA and sgc hadn’t been around very long so I didn’t know which company was better. I sent them to sgc and got two 7’s, one 7.5 and two 8’s.
Pretty good for buying 5 raw Brett rookies sight unseen.
I still have one of the 7’s and one of the 8’s still in the same sgc holders.

@Darin that is the best psa 8 Brett rookie I have ever seen! beautiful.

I have to say, The 75 Brett is on my very short list of favorite baseball cards ever. I love them. I got my first way back in the summer of 1993, Bretts last season. I saved for what seemed like a long time to get it. That $150 might just as well have been $10,000 to 15 year old me! The old time dealer I bought it from had graded it as NM. I still have it all these years later. I sent it in to SGC just last fall just to see how it would grade. sure enough, it came back a NM-7. The guy got it right all those years ago!

I have no idea, because I think it's nicer than both 8s! Maybe some day when I'm feeling frisky I'll either send it in to reassess or crack and try my luck that way.

I too had a 75T Aaron PSA9. I want to say it was the second or third 9. I bought it from a dealer at the 2002 National in Chicago. It was in a PSA8 holder and it was criminally under-graded. Took it to PSA's booth at the show and had it looked over. They agreed and had it re-slabbed within an hour. Back when PSA would do such things.

I was building a 75T graded set at the time and I traded it to a friend who was also building a 75 set, but in higher grade than I was.

So full of action, my name should be a verb.

    Unbelievably sharp OPC Brett RC!

SO ON THE LEFT SIDE of the card in the green border near the top brett's head, you can see a very slight indention. the card stock of the opc cards just were not that good. these flaws are the ones now that cause your grade to dip to a 7 or 8. i have several opc's just like that.

in my opinion, if the top left corner hasn't been cut/shaved, then the card should be a solid 9 or 10 because of the great centering and overall look. no way you get a 10 on this one now.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

    Wow.

That is a nice GB. Anyone want to speculate/guess what it might hit? It's going to be a LOT.

What's the pop on these as a 10?

I think the OPCs are such a weird part of the hobby that makes some people ignore and others go crazy.

Pop report shows it is 1 of 3 10's.

    Maybe 20k-25k?

  • brad31brad31 Posts: 2,774 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am guessing closer to $50K. Never guess close on 10s.
