In 2018 I thought it was a toss up to invest in either Acuna or Ohtani RCs. Hate to see him injured again but think I made the right (lucky so far) decision. As always with investing in sports cards the bust or boom is a roll of the dice.

Glad the concern for a truly gifted athlete is about his numbers.

Acuna had looked far less intimidating so far this season. It makes me wonder if he was trying to protect an already damaged knee and it finally collapsed under the weight of expectations.

    Gobble.

I prayed to St Sebastian - the patron saint of baseball players before I considered any numbers.

    My conscience is clear.

It's the perfect opportunity for Mr. Clutch to accept a trade to a contender in the Eastern Time Zone, where people will actually still be awake to witness his patented Hall of Fame worthy, late game, rally killing strikeouts - provided he's able to return from his own knee injury in a timely fashion, of course.

From a card value point of view, I don’t think he will “crash and burn”. The injury will hurt demand and prices will fall but unless collectors think this is a career changing injury I don’t see a mass sell off.

Do career total numbers matter that much anymore under the current baseball mindset? Isn’t all about the peak? He came back well from the other ACL. I don’t have any Acuna but I will be watching, if there is a huge sell off I may put a few chips on him.

I think this injury may play into his contract situation. He was pushing for a career extension and this injury may make that harder for both sides. I’ll recklessly speculate that this leads to him being traded.

I’m not versed enough in modern baseball stats to explain. But here are some articles that discuss it.

Anyone wanna buy a couple hundred Kevin Maas rookie cards? Price is one cent for the lot, free shipping.

I can laugh about it now, because I stopped crying about it years ago. His Yankees career as the next Mantle or Gehrig soon went bust, along with hopes this card investment would go towards my future retirement income. 😆

The last active player i collected was Tom Brady. Last active baseball player i collected was Frank Thomas and he has been retired for what, 15 years?

I think subconsciously this is why. Too many variables with the active guys.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Gregg Jeffries and Kevin Maas? Did you guys learn nothing from this guy

  • CakesCakes Posts: 3,626 ✭✭✭✭✭

What an odd turn this took, Kevin Mass, Greg Jeffries, etc. have nothing to do with Acuna. Poor comparisons.

Successful coin BST transactions with Gerard and segoja.

Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.

I think some guys from the 80s are good comparisons: Eric Davis, Darryl Strawberry, Mattingly. even Juan Gonzalez. great player, just couldn't stay healthy once he got to his 30's

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Those are much better comparisons, but to compare him to highly rated prospects that never made it are poor ones.

Comparisons to Eric Davis, Darryl Strawberry, Juan Gonzalez and Ruben Sierra are valid at this juncture. Only time will tell if they remain that way.

Nobody is comparing Kevin Maas to Acuna. The point is the cards of any player less than 15 years into their career are one horrific injury, one bar fight, and/or one inappropriate relationship from being bad investments.

    Brien Taylor = barfight

    Wander Franco..

Then there are PEDS = Tatis Jr

Then take those who had more than Solid Careers but who's cards now have almost zero interest - those like Carlos Delgado, Mo Vaughn or Border Line HOF's like Andruw Jones

Acuna is on the HOF track. Aside from his 40/70 season (which will not be touched for a looooong time)

    4× All-Star (2019, 2021–2023)
    NL MVP (2023)
    All-MLB First Team (2023)
    2× All-MLB Second Team (2019, 2020)
NL Rookie of the Year (2018)
    NL Hank Aaron Award (2023)
    3× Silver Slugger Award (2019, 2020, 2023)
    2× NL stolen base leader (2019, 2023)

His RC cards will always be in demand.

EDLC won't get the accolades but he has the potential to reach those numbers. But yeah, its tough seeing one of the best hitters in the game go down again.
