A Few MS62 Seated Halves (Update 8/2025)

MS62 can be a tricky grade level in that there are some dogs (no eye appeal), coins that have rub that should be in AU holders, and usually are luster challenged. In my seated half collecting journey, I've been surprised at a few that really are nice to own. Of course, they are less expensive than the whiz bang upper MS levels.

I wanted to share the ones I own with you. If you have a MS62 of whatever denomination that you like, please share in this thread!

I love an MS62 graded classic. I can’t speak for this series as I lack the familiarity, let alone expertise, but that’s been a great “value” grade for me over the years while still offering an excellent example.

Grading will always be subjective- that is simply how it is and I do not see that changing. The I weep concept can be out of happiness or what should have been. And in looking at images posted here it seems there so much to see and appreciate. The subjective nature of grading will always be part of the process. That will not change... ever.

Depends! Many are luster challenged, yet have no wear and this is the grade for them. In the seated half world, this is often the case. The 1860 above, however, is proof-like and the mirrors make it very attractive so perhaps this one might fit the 58 + with no wear with great eye appeal (pertaining to your question).

@Catbert . I have spent a large part of my collecting career collecting circulated Seated coins.
Except to admire the pretty coins I have all but ignored uncirculated coins. I go into the search for Seated coins with the idea 99% of them have been messd with. I personally have only seen 2 Seated coins I feel (might) be completely original. How do you view uncirculated coins? Are they all dipped, polished, or perhaps messed with in the past or do you find more strickly original coins in that population? James

My preference is for great AU coins, however, their availability are limited. Thus I seek nice coins on a wider grading spectrum. As you know, there is quality to be found among all grade levels.

I don’t view UNC halves much differently, but my budget limits my access to the higher grades that are often stunning to me. So the lower 62/63s, if attractive, are just fine. Are they any more original? Dunno. I’m fine with market acceptable originality and can’t/won’t restrict myself to a too harsh standard.

I do like some colorful toning. Buying a strictly “original” coin more often than not involves some dark and unappealing surfaces. Unless it’s a tough date, I’ll likely pass.

@Catbert . That is the best attitude to take in my opinion. I started out in the Late 1990's with the idea I would put together a collection of choice original coins. I had about a dozen coins in my collection when I discovered there was a discussion board devoted to just Seated coins.
(long gone). I was actually physically sick about it when I learned none of my coins were strict original. On the other hand, knowledge is power and they taught me how to look for dipping, polishing, digger coins etc. I too adopted a philosophy that it was more important to find attractive , interesting coins. james
