There was an economic depression that year, most people were living on farms and trying to eek out a living.

Even with the inflation calculator pegging 1893 $ to todays “dollar” at 1 to 35…. these prices are absurdly low.
Not only is a Chain Cent in fine $5 but a fine in those days was AU maybe better.
Can you imagine the reaction of a hard laboring farmer or factory worker as his son shows him an old half penny that he paid $5.00 for using three years worth of his hard earned savings?
That young collector would have gotten the belt.
