New Byzantine Gold Tremissis Purchase

Unfortunately I've been very busy the last while so haven't even though about coins.

Got the itch back yesterday though and after some research I purchased this coin.

It's my first Byzantine coin. I find that when delving into a new series a new purchase is always good to set the radar.

Can anyone recommend a good book on Byzantine Gold coins?

Peace

Just reading about the word CONOB as seen on the coin.

The CON part means that the coin was struck in Constantinopolis and the OB part has two meanings.

    1) it stands for Obryzum which means refined gold and
    2) in the Greek lettering system OB stands for 72

So this coin is literally 1/72 pound of pure, refined gold.

I love learning stuff like this :)

    Peace

Love seeing someone posting Byzantine. Can't recommend anything specific for Byzantine gold, but there should be plenty out there.

    Hi harasha,

I assume that you collect byzantine coins? Or at least have a few byzantine coins in your collection?

Feel free to post pics of any byzantine coins that you may own.

What is your main collecting interest?

    Peace

You have to admire the longevity of the Eastern Romans; they kept the Empire going in the east through the Middle Ages. Here are two from my collection - 400 years apart.

I like the earlier (pre-Phocas) bronzes, especially those of Maurice Tiberius. One of my better ones, from Harlan Berk.
