Toner found in the 'wild' today

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,681 ✭✭✭✭✭

Found this pretty cool raw toned 1964 Kennedy half dollar at a local coin shop. Sure was glad I went thru the extra trays off to the side. Not too shabby for 25 bucks and who knows, I may get it graded one day. I'm leaning NT for this coin based on what I've seen in the past.

I like the look. How close is the top half to terminal toning?

For $25 its nice. A little dark for me, but still a decent coin.

    That’s a very attractive Kennedy 👌

Don't underestimate the value of a toned 64 kennedy. I paid the then-lofty sum of $30 or 35 for a raw 2-sided toner on ebay some years back and then had the audacity to have it graded. (66) did well enough on GC that it didn't cost me any seller fees.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Sweet! And natural tone. Those splotchy patterns on the obverse are obviously the result of where the coin contacted the canvas bag during storage. I've seen plenty of similar Morgans over the years.

It's pretty close to that, the luster up there is muted more but it's not flat and dull. The toning patterns do look like canvas bag, but fingerprints are a part of it too. They blend in well though.

Not sure why I thought a Kennedy half was a silver dollar.

    Thanks for setting me straight.

My personal taste is it’s a little too dark. And I wouldn’t be a fan of the deep contrast in toning.

It's an interesting looking, inexpensive coin with a story. I put coins like that in Air-tites and keep them on my desk for a pleasant distraction.
