spree to spurs?(wouldn't do any good in june vs. the lakers ;), baker to boston a done deal?, all 29

if sonics dont give shard a deal close to the "max", rashard will just take on houston for 3 yr, 4.5 mill.

It isn't clear what the Sonics meant when they said that re-signing Rashard Lewis was their number one priority. They have been trying to move Vin Baker in order to clear some cap space, but no one wants to take on Baker's bloated $54 million deal in order to help the Sonics keep their most valued free agent.

this is just my thought..why add rashard when u already got griffen and rice at the 3?

BOSTON: Despite lots of rumors there still is no news from Boston. Seattle media is claiming a deal involving Vin Baker is done, but Boston still is not commenting on the rumor. The way the deal breaks down is Seattle wants Kenny Anderson, Eric Williams and Joe Forte in exchange for Vin Baker and Shammond Williams. Its a horrible deal for Boston, but talk continues. It seems that Baker may have met with Celtic management this weekend to discuss bonuses in his contract and working out 'minor' details. Boston media is reporting a deal could be announced this week.

MIAMI: The Heat are still very much in a holding pattern, typical of the Heat they are waiting for the dust to settle and find a bargain. Talks with Rod Strickland are still on going, but it seems the Heat would rather have Travis Best, but he's still shopping. The surprise name linked to the Heat is Keon Clark, who is frustrated with progress with the Raptors and has begun talks with other teams

NEW JERSEY: The Nets have reportedly tendered an offer to Chris Childs, and they are still looking for another player. The Nets have a fairly loaded roster, but that hasn't stopped them from looking. Childs looks to be the major addition, but a secondary player, likely a frontline player appears to be in the cards for new Jersey, but nothing high priced, as like many teams in the league New Jersey is very close to the luxury tax, and ownership does not want to pay it.

NEW YORK: The Knicks are still shopping, Keon Clark appears to be in the picture again, but without a deal with Toronto its unlikely. Reports from the region say a deal with Milwaukee died this weekend when Glenn Robinson was arrested. The Knicks are still offering Kurt Thomas and Charlie Ward to a number of clubs, and both players seem to have appeal. Thomas had a breakout season last year, and Ward's ending deal appeals to those looking for space in 2003. The Knicks still seem poised to make a deal, what that deal turns out to be still is not clear.

ORLANDO: The Magic have made some progress with Pat Garrity and a deal seems imminent. The Magic have cooled on trades, and unless something groundbreaking falls in their laps this will likely be the roster they bring to camp. Word has it Magic GM John Gabriel has had talks with Patrick Ewing about a buyout, and his retirement also seems imminent.

PHILADELPHIA: The 76ers still have not reached a deal with Greg Buckner, or Rodney Rogers but both seem to still be the players Philly is looking to add. Rogers is talking with other teams, but word is he wants to play in Philly. Buckner's situation seems to be that he got a matching offer from Dallas, although that's not been confirmed. The Allen Iverson situation seems to be cooling, and despite a lot of hype, a real crime was not committed, and everything is an allegation at this point. I know ardent opponents of Iverson will continue to say he's a thug, and I won't dispute that, but at this point what actually happened and the why things are being painted in the media may not be the same portrayal. The 76ers are NOT shopping AI. The NBA on the other hand may hit AI with a fine or ever a suspension according to word from the league office.

WASHINGTON: The Wizards are still talking with Jeff McInnis, but after giving Larry Hughes the bulk of their cash this offseason a deal with McInnis doesn't seem likely. The Wizards are not active on the trade front, but a deal with Jahidi White could happen, as he seems to be the odd big man out. If they can find another point guard it seems they'd be agreeable to a deal. Nothing is pending.

ATLANTA: The Hawks were pleased to get Theo Ratliff on the court at the Shaw Summer Pro League, his return may make Nazr Mohammed expendable, but not before training camp. Given Theo's injury history the Hawks are not looking to make any changes just yet. The club is very pleased with Dan Dickau's summer performances, and Dion Glover has looked fabulous. The Hawks have nothing pending, so this may be the roster that comes to camp.

CHICAGO: The Bulls still have not made any deals, but they are active. As veterans begin to lose spots the Bulls have offers. They did lose Scott Williams to Phoenix, despite a larger offer from the Bulls. But it seems that they are only looking for veterans, and there is no rush in Chicago to make the wrong deal.

DETROIT: The Pistons made the first strike, but a move beyond Chauncey Billups doesn't seem likely. The Pistons have a fairly loaded roster, and beyond adding a few players for the training camp roster, there does not seem to be another 'key' free agent in Detroit's future. Joe Dumars has been emphatic that he is not looking at trades of a 'serious'; nature and deals involving Jerry Stackhouse are not going to happen.

CLEVELAND: The Cavs are still working on internal issues, namely getting Ricky Davis on a deal. Its reported that the Cavs offer was 3 years at about $15 million. Davis was said to be seeking a 6 years deal in the $30 million range. Still no changes on the Andre Miller front, but that's not to say clubs aren't calling. Cavs GM Jim Paxson has become almost hostile in response to questions about Dre, saying if they wanted to trade him, he'd be dealt. The Clippers and Knicks seem to be the more serious of the Miller suitors.

INDIANA: The Pacers shocked a lot of people when they announced they had no interest in Rod Strickland. Why this came out the way it did is still a mystery, but talk continues that Strickland could land in Indiana, and that Donnie Walsh's statements, might have been done to get talks back to a realistic plateau, after Chauncey Billups got the entire median exception from Detroit, Strickland started asking for a similar deal, a deal no teams wants to make in the elder Strickland. The Pacers are still looking at free agent options, but most of them are going to be training camp prospects rather than potential starters.

MILWAUKEE: The Bucks had been talking with a lot of clubs about trades, the prime guy mentioned was Glenn Robinson, but this weekend's arrest in Chicago ended most clubs interest. The Bucks say by and large they have nothing on deck, but Travis Best seems to be trying to get a deal done, likely involving a trade with the Bulls. Talks have been introductory according to Bucks sources, where terms were discussed, and Best is seeking a $5 million a year deal, and Milwaukee has zero interest in luxury tax, so if Chicago wants to make a deal Milwaukee is listening.

NEW ORLEANS: The Hornets do not have much on deck, they have an outstanding contract extension with Baron Davis, but he continues to say an extension is not something he'll agree to this year, but has every intention of reporting to camp and playing in New Orleans this year. Davis told media he simply wanted to be sure the New Orleans situation was a good fit. Rumor has it unless the Hornets get 'serious' about marketing Baron as their star, he will not sign with them.

TORONTO: The Raptors are the pawn in the Donyell Marshall game, but they are serious with their interest in doing a sign and trade with Utah. Its unclear exactly what Toronto is offering, but the rumor is Jerome Williams is the meat of the deal. The Jazz say they simply want to retain Marshall, but talks are not going well and Toronto is waiting with open arms. The Keon Clark saga is also ongoing, with Toronto having made it clear to Keon that economics are going to control what they can offer him. He is shopping, but Toronto has the right to match whatever offers he may get, and it seems they will match.

DALLAS: The Mavs have interest in re-signing Wang Zhi-Zhi but a deal is not close. Raef LaFrentz did agree to a 7 year deal at $60 million, so the key players have been retained. It seems the Mavs may have gotten involved in the Greg Buckner talks, with league sources saying Dallas would match the 76ers offer, although an offer sheet has not been given by Dallas. The Nick Van Exel trade rumors continue, but league sources say its unlikely anyone takes on Nick's deal.

DENVER: The Nuggets do not have much on deck. Beyond signing draft choices, they do not appear active on the free agent front, and it seems the plan is to build around the young guys they have and preserve cap space for 2003. Denver free agent Voshon Leonard is finding some interest around the league at the $1 million range. Utah seems to have the most interest.

HOUSTON: A little birdie continues to say if Seattle doesn't get their act together the Rockets may find Rashard Lewis on their doorstep. The Sonics and Lewis are very far apart on talks, and despite larger money in Seattle, Rashard is looking for the 'respect' he feels he's earned, and has asked for a deal similar to Vin Baker's. The Sonics have tried to negotiate, but their tactics have Rashard threatening to walk, and his team of choice is the Rockets. The Rockets are also set to start negotiations with Steve Francis on an extension, and if they can ink Lewis' talks will go much easier.

MEMPHIS: The Grizzlies have done a great job reshaping the roster, and they are still active in talks. Its seems that Earl Watson will be a Grizzly next season, as Seattle does not have the ability to match the deal offered by Memphis. The Grizz are also rumored to have interest in a 7'1 center, and Jerry West has many in the media guessing he'll sign Cezary Trybanski from Poland (a 7'1 center)for the median exception.

MINNESOTA: The Timberwolves are still looking for a reserve point guard and the top guard on their list appears to be Troy Hudson, but league sources say Minnesota is no more interested in Troy at $3 million per season than Orlando was, if he lowers his price, they would sign him. Jeff McInnis has surfaced as a candidate, and talk continues that Minnesota is angling for Andre Miller. A league source says Wally Szczerbiak may have 'asked' for a trade, after extension talks have not yielded the kind of numbers they were seeking. Trade 'demands" are typically a way to motivate a team, but given the hard-nosed nature of Kevin McHale, I don't see him blinking.

SAN ANTONIO: The Spurs have rounded out their roster, beyond adding a few players to their training camp roster, they have made their major moves. The Spurs surfaced last week with interest in Latrell Sprewell, if you recall when Spree was with Golden State he lobbied Gregg Popovich to trade for him... in the middle of a game... It seems the Spurs were looking at what New York really wanted for Spree, but nothing more has come from it. There were rumors that San Antonio may have offered out Steve Smith and luggage to improve the two guard spot, but Spurs sources say they have not made any offers on anyone- like they'd admit to it.

UTAH: The Jazz have negotiated themselves into a corner, Donyell Marshall is ready to walk, but he calmed media saying he felt a deal could be reached and talk of him signing for an exception was not a threat rather pointing out he had other options. The Jazz have offer far less in terms of dollars and years than Marshall was seeking. Bryon Russell seems to be on his way to Dallas, but talk of him in Dallas have died off, as Dallas may have offered a deal to Greg Buckner. The Jazz do not have any serious free agents on deck, although rumor has it they are trying to sign Voshon Leonard in the $1 million range.

GOLDEN STATE: The Warriors have been quiet, they have very little on deck in terms of trade or free agency. The main topics appear to be coaching, and a number of candidates have interviewed. Mike Dunleavy Sr., officially withdrew his interest in the Warriors to help calm the storm surrounding Mike Jr, and the media so he can focus on getting ready for his rookie year. The Warriors have interest in signing Wang Zhi-Zhi and may help Wang get a big offer from Dallas, who claims they will match, but word also has it Wang was disappointed in how Dallas handled the China Nation team demands, and may be unwilling to re-sign. Mavs sources doubt there will be an issue, and say talks are awaiting Wang's selection of a new agent.

LA CLIPPERS: The Clippers may be facing their last season as the exciting young team, word has it both Elton Brand and Lamar Odom asked for maximum money, and both were told no. Now, it seems likely that the Clippers are simply bargaining, but word from the beginning was no one on the Clips would get max, but the Clips desired to keep all of the players they have. Talks with Cleveland are ongoing regarding Andre Miller, and the Clips are also said to have renewed their interest in Baron Davis.

LA LAKERS: The Lakers are also quiet, but talk of Charles Oakley coming to LA have cooled. And very little else is going on. The Lakers have had a nice summer league, but it does not appear anyone will stick that was not under contract.

PHOENIX: The Suns landed some rebounding help in Scott Williams, and got him fairly cheap. The Suns are also in the market for a reserve point guard, but it does not seem like they have a deal in the works with anyone.

PORTLAND: The Blazers still have not reached a deal with Bonzi Wells, the long running rumor was Bonzi wanted out, but Blazers sources say that's not true, and a deal wit Wells could be coming in the next week. The Blazers have not been linked to anything serious on the traded front, but rumors continue the Trader Bob Whitsitt has Dale Davis on the block, likely at his own request.

SACRAMENTO: The Kings are simply waiting for Bibby. The Kings are rumored to have put a 7 year $9 million a year deal on table for Bibby, who initially seemed receptive to the deal, only to have talks break off as more was requested by David Falk, its unclear exactly what the Bibby camp is seeking, but anything more than $9 million, means Sacramento must trade a way a player under contract to create the room under the luxury tax - see ya Doug!, its commonly assumed if someone has to go it would be Doug Christie. Terry Porter, may be close to a deal to join the Kings, as an assistant coach

SEATTLE: The Sonics appear to have a deal with Boston, according to numerous printed reports, all that remains are minor details and a deal could be announced this week. reports from Boston say Vin Baker met with Celtic management, and that minor details have been worked out, and an announcement could be coming any day. If Seattle is able to move Baker, a larger deal with Rashard Lewis becomes possible without the luxury tax.
