You mean what was it before someone altered it. Or it could be a Chinese counterfeit from the jump.

    1913

    Looks like 1912.

    It is 100% a 1918.

That would be a $10 million coin even with the scratch.

  • V nickels we’re minted from 1883-1913

  • Cannot be a 1918

  • Back side of v nickel

    Well, it COULD be...

Also, did we uncover another alt here? Why does @Doug2596 have @HiBucky coin?

It's Friday. This week's coin is a 1913 liberty nickel. Last week was a gold war nickel. Can't wait until next week's episode comes out.

Then why did he call it "my 1913 nickel"?

And you were out of town for 2 hours??? This was such an emergency that it couldn't wait 2 hours?

    If this Walking Liberty can be a 1913, your V nickel can be a 1918! 🤣 :D

Someone shaved off the diagonal and horizontal parts on the 4 of a 1943 half dollar.
Usually, this tooling is done on a 1944-D cent to create a 1914-D.

  • I didn’t renew my pcgs membership and didn’t think I could post on your message board so I asked Bucky to post it for me. The coin came to me from my father in law along with 27 rolls of v nickels. He got them from his great aunt when she died.

Guys get over it.. I posted his coin Why... Because he asked me too. Otherwise I really don't care what you have to say other then your comments on the coin... Enjoy

That really doesn't address the question of whether "his" is "my", not that it matters that much, I suppose. We can always just report it to the mods and let them determine if there is an alt, if we care enough.

If you really think you have a 1913 there, then send it in under the PCGS Rarities grading tier.

Since you haven’t, we know that you know that you have a common damaged coin worth $0.05.

There Are haunting similarities here, though the OPs coin shows flattening of the details from circulation, making the numerals “thicker”. Why, though, such unnatural damage on the date?

Because it's an altered date and a collector marked it as such by crossing out the date. This was not uncommon practice.

    Odd. If I were a “collector”, I’d keep that….

I assume you're also loading up on Chinese counterfeits?

The problem with keeping altered coins around is that they enter the market.

I did make a GIF and the “3” is closer. Different position so no Cigar.

your inter-generational clairvoyance is more amazing than the damaged coin and hibucky is a long-timer in good standing

Intergenerational clairvoyance??? Why not historical knowledge? Among others, my grandfather and his friends used to do it. You'll see a fair number of 16-D added D dimes that have an "X" through them. [Hint: not a mint error.]
