I was watching highlights of his fight with Ngannou last fall and he looked really fat/unathletic. how dominating could he be if put some/any effort into weight training etc? really strange to see a boxer look so flabby.

People tend to change only if they have to maybe a loss will make him do that or maybe not.
NFL: Buffalo Bills & Green Bay Packers
true. it still seems though that he could go from being great to all time great with just extra effort. it isn't like he cant afford the best personal trainers/chefs.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Why didn't Shaq ever get in shape while playing basketball?
He just relied on the physical advantage his heigh gave him.

He already is an all-time great, don't let the Ngannou fight fool you, he didn't take that fight seriously, he saw it as a UFC sideshow payday, yet he still won. When he's serious, you can forget about it. He prefers to weigh more than his opponents because it gives him a major advantage in the clinch, and more power behind his punches. He's about 6'8", and very athletic, he can move around the ring like he's Muhammad Ali, he can slip punches and has a granite chin, you may put him down but you're not putting him away. His boxing skills are phenomenal and he has tons of heart, as displayed against Otto Wallin when he sustained two gruesome cuts on his right eyelid, there was blood everywhere, and he fought through it and beat Wallin. He's as savage as it gets, as demonstrated against Deontay Wilder in their second fight, when he busted Wilder open and proceeded to lick the blood from Wilder's neck during a clinch, he beat Wilder up so bad that the towel had to be thrown in. His height, weight, skills, athleticism, heart, simply put, he's a fighting machine like this sport has never seen and he raises hell in any era you drop him in.
Fury vs Wallin, you can see the Red blood stains all over Fury's White trunks, the cuts took 40 stitches to seal.
Fury licks the blood from Deontay Wilder's neck.
The real Tyson Fury.

I can see he is a monster out there, but it does seem to me that if he went from 40% body fat to 20% he would have even more power behind those punches and be even quicker in the ring. maybe he wouldn't have to take damage like that if he could put away fighters faster?
just my 2 cents
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I had the same thoughts about Buster Douglas - guy was in pretty good shape when he took down Tyson then came out looking like the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man in his title defense - he only put on 15 lbs but it sure looked like a lot of the old muscle turned to fat while he enjoyed the Tyson aftermath. Fury’s not a flash in the pan like Douglas turned out to be, but he’s getting older and may not be as hungry as he once was (no pun intended ).

It's interesting that Tyson Fury has been brought up, because tomorrow night Tyson Fury will fight Oleksandr Usyk, and this fight will crown an undisputed World heavyweight champion, and there hasn't been an undisputed World heavyweight champion since 1999 when Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield for all the belts. Tomorrow night's fight will be the biggest fight in decades, it's being called the fight of the century. Both guys are unbeaten and it should be a good fight. Oleksandr Usyk is a slick boxer, he's hard to pin down because of his constant movement, and Tyson Fury is just a mountain of man that can do it all, Fury has the height, weight, reach, and experience advantage and I just don't see how Usyk overcomes the odds. If Usyk is going to beat Tyson Fury, he's going to have to pull off some Rocky vs Drago type stuff.
He doesn't want to give up his beer.

This is going down in about 2 hours. I love both of these guys, two all-time great fighters. This one is for a place among the pantheon of boxing gods, names like Ali, Louis, Dempsey, Marciano. This is going to be extremely difficult for Oleksandr Usyk to pull off, he's in for the fight of his life. If Usyk does somehow manage to defeat Fury, this will be right up there with the biggest upsets in not only boxing history, but sports history. Fury is a juggernaut. May the best man win.
After watching that video I can't see why anyone would get in the ring with him, the guy is a monster. Just the same, I'm old school and what I saw seemed more like fighting than boxing. Either Fury is the most elusive guy on the planet or his opponents were swinging wildly, nobody seemed able to hit the guy!! How does everyone think he'd compare to boxers from the 60's and 70's??
Holy fu..... sh.., Oleksandr Usyk just put together the fight of a lifetime, Usyk is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world!
David just sleighed Goliath!
What a fight.
I'm shaking. There's no other sport like boxing.
God I'm so happy for Usyk and Ukraine after the stuff they've been through with Russia invading.
He put together the fight of his life.
I think Fury should have gotten in better shape!!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Here are the highlights. First of all notice the difference in size between Fury and Usyk. This is literally David vs Goliath. I don't know what to say, I'm speechless. Tyson Fury debuted in 2008 and had never been beaten, he is an all-time great, but in this sport it doesn't matter. Every fighter is a puzzle that you have to solve to win, the legendary Ray Arcel once said, "Boxing is brains over brawn. I don't care how much ability you got, if you can't think you're just another bum in the park", meaning it's a mental chess match and you have to outthink your opponent and solve his puzzle. Sometimes on rare occasions, the puzzle never gets solved, and a fighter is never beaten, like Rocky Marciano, no one ever could solve the riddle of Marciano. Up to this point, nobody had ever been able to solve the puzzle of Fury because of his size, weight, and skills, and most people including myself didn't think the smaller Usyk had a chance in hell against Fury. Boy was I wrong. I know Usyk hasn't cracked a smile in a month, he has a heavy heart because his country is being raped by a psychopath named Putin. Before the fight he was eerily serious, and came to the ring dressed in warrior garb with a look on his face that I rarely see in this sport. Tyson Fury on the other hand has been his usual arrogant and big-mouthed self. When they stood in center ring to touch gloves before the opening bell, Fury was clowning Usyk, and Usyk just stared at him with this look, if looks could kill. This is why I love this sport more than any other, you really see what a guy is made of, his heart, when he has to defend himself against attack, and when he has to face impossible physical odds that are very hazardous to his health. In my opinion, this will go down as one of the biggest upsets in sports history, Usyk pulled off the impossible, and beat the great Tyson Fury, he solved the puzzle that no one has been able to solve and he did it with every disadvantage he could possibly have faced. Notice in round 9, Usyk catches Fury with a vicious left hook and nearly puts Fury away until the referee steps in and saves Fury by declaring a knockdown. The fight goes on and Usyk wins by split decision and rightfully so, congrats to Oleksandr Usyk and Ukraine.

I think you're right! 😂😂
He almost had Fury out in round 9, but Fury's knee went downwards and the referee declared it a knockdown. His legs were gone after that left hook.
Boxing promotor Eddie Hearn has commented on the fight.
"I thought the fight was over,” Hearn says. “Honestly, I’m watching Fury, he was unbelievable. His movement, that he used his size, he started to lean on Usyk. You know, he’s walking him onto everything, bringing him up through the middle, the jab was on point. He was showboating. People say, did he switch off? He’s just being Tyson Fury.
“You’re not going take that away from the fighter. That’s what he’s done in all those fights where he’s looked sensational. You have to mark the brilliance of Oleksandr Usyk. You’re talking about a guy that, he beat every champion at cruiserweight. He went up and he beat [Anthony Joshua] twice to become the world heavyweight champion. He’s just beaten Tyson Fury to become unified world heavyweight champion. You’re talking about one of the greatest fighters of our generation.
“You could have had any amount of money in a bet after six rounds, that fight was over. There was no way. I’m sitting there thinking, this is unbelievable. This is a walk in the park. There’s going to be no rematch. AJ straight in with Fury. And all of a sudden, it turns, and as I said, the ninth round, probably lucky to survive, but showed unbelievable heart to stay on his feet. Incredible, incredible fight.”
Hearn adds: “As a Brit, we wanted to win tonight, but you can’t help but but feel for [Usyk] and his country. I mean, what an achievement. The guy is going to lift Ukraine. He’s going be an absolute national hero and so he should be. You know, he’s a he’s a good man. He’s a good human. And what a performance. Because honestly, I thought he was completely done in that fight.”
Both fighters have commented on a potential rematch. You know I must say, I think it's pretty classless of Tyson Fury to say that the judges sided with Usyk because his country is at war. I watched the fight and Fury was clowning around in the ring, dancing and playing up to the crowd and Usyk came to fight, Fury just flat out got his a.. kicked and he should admit it.
Tyson Fury reveals decision over Oleksandr Usyk rematch clause after defeat
The Ukrainian beat the Briton on points in Riyadh to become the first undisputed heavyweight world champion in 24 years.
Tyson Fury has confirmed he will activate his rematch clause to fight Oleksandr Usyk for a second time after defeat in the undisputed heavyweight world title fight in Riyadh.
The Briton was outpointed by the Ukrainian by split decision and faced a controversial and crucial count in the ninth round, narrowly escaping a stoppage.
But both fighters possessed the option to fight again should they suffer defeat and Fury immediately confirmed his intent and revealed the month the fight will take place.
“I won that fight in my opinion,” Fury said. “I think he won a few of those rounds but I won the majority of them.
“His country is at war, so people are siding with the country at war.
“We go back to our families and we run it back in October. For sure, we’ll rest up, then get back on it in October, I thought I won the fight but I’m not going to cry and make excuses.”
While Usyk refused to commit to the rematch immediately, with the fight almost certainly not for the undisputed heavyweight title crown, with governing bodies poised to call for mandatory title defences from the rankings.
“Since 2008 I was planning for this. It was a big opportunity for me and my country, Slava Ukraine. It’s a great time and a great day. It’s not for my win,” Usyk said.
“It’s for my God, my supporters, my country, the Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian mother and father, children.
“I want to go to my home, I want to rest, a break, I want to eat, sleep, kiss my wife.”
The timeline for the rematch could be impacted by the fighters’ recovery time.
Usyk may have sustained a broken jaw after going to hospital, according to Fury himself, with a suspect broken jaw.
Fury said: “We've just had a fight, as you can see with my face, I'm pretty busted up and he's gone to hospital with a broken jaw and he's busted too.
“We punched the f*** out of each other for 12 rounds. So we're going to go home, eat some food, drink a few beers, spend some family time, walk my dog, go to the tip and me and Frank will talk about what's going to happen in the future.”
Like I said, he likes his beer

I just read where it was an excellent fight.
I look forward to seeing the replay highlights on Youtube.
Fury is still an all-time great, it took almost 16 years for someone to beat him. Fury's problem last night was that he fought backing up for a lot of the fight, and was clowning around too much, Usyk was going forward and taking the fight to him, Usyk meant business last night. Honestly Fury looked like crap for a lot of the fight, he didn't look like a guy that was fighting for a legacy among the pantheon of the greatest, Fury had his moments but Usyk really wanted it. Fury can avenge the loss if he goes back and looks at what he did wrong and makes the adjustments, just like Louis did against Schmeling. I take my hat off to Usyk, he came in there like Rocky against Drago, he meant business, and he fought his heart out.
Usyk posted this picture last night, he says he will fight a rematch.
Having watched the highlights, this fight reminded me a little bit of the Foreman-Frazier fight, as far as the style and size of the boxers.
Usyk looking a little bit like the style and size of Joe Frazier. While Fury looking a little bit like the style and size of George Foreman. Of course this match had a different outcome.
On the posted highlight film, I'm still wondering how Usyk survived that right uppercut to his chin? That punch might have knocked out a bull elephant. LOL
That's one of the reasons I love this sport so much, Usyk showed so much heart last night, the odds couldn't have been more stacked against him.
So the guy from Ukraine won? Coincidence?
Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

I only watched the mentioned snippets of the fight. The judges had it as a very close split decision.
That being said, considering the world situation, I wouldn't rule out your implied possibility.
Fury didn't seem upset about it. They both made a lot of money, and they'll both make a lot more in the rematch.
another thought from a guy who likes boxing/combat sports, but is far from an expert on them.
I didnt pay for the fight, but I have seen some still images. fury has his trunks pulled up ridiculously high. I understand that boxers do that to make "low blows" much less low. it looks to me like fury's trunks are about 4 inches below his chest. does that not seem pretty extreme to anyone else? pretty much takes away all body shots.
should there be a standard all boxers have to follow? perhaps no trunks above the navel? trunks to hip level and no higher?
not only does it look stupid, but it sure must take away a big target for the opponent to hit.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Should have a TKO in the 9th round. Ref did all he could to hand Fury the victory.

‘People Are Siding with a Country at War’: Tyson Fury Suggests Judges Gave Usyk the Victory Due to Ukraine War
“You know, his country is at war, so people are siding with a country at war. But make no mistake, I won that fight, in my opinion, and I’ll be back. I’ve got a rematch clause.”
