Looks like someone took a blue ink pen and marked around Kennedy's portrait. GTG PCGS

Roll searchers sometimes mark certain coins when searching halves, but usually not silver because that’s what they are seeking. I don’t think I have ever seen someone mark silver. Very strange for sure.

It could have had a wash applied to it and then wiped free of the field. I use this technique when model building. Let the capillary action do the work. Anyhow, looks like someone took some time with it. I would call this one, graffiti.”

I would buy it, I don't care what caused it. PCGS graded it and it looks cool.

The real question is what would it grade at cacg?

Wow, interesting. Not exactly "mint state" anymore.

How is this not "altered surfaces"?

Really surprised it didn’t get a details grade.

Some CRHers don't know about 40%ers. They assume that they are clad like the dimes and quarters. Also, I have read of at least one instance that they threw 40%ers back because they only liked 90%(this was over 10 years ago however). I detest half dollar marking.

Mechanical error, there is no way that should be MS let alone straight graded. There are multiple problems beyond just the added color. However, if the price was right I would have bought it just for the novelty.

As a searcher myself, if you just look at the rims it's easy to miss the 40%'s. Sometimes they blend in with the clads. I actually have a huge collection of marked halves. I searched so many over the years and started notice a few of the same markers, as well as some unique markers, so I decided to put aside a collection. I have to say, I never have found a silver halve marked.
I do agree there are folks that don't know about the 40%'s, especially the 1970D.

I sure agree with that. In the early years, I was just looking at the rim edges. Many 40%'ers look like clad. When that first 40%'er hit the dump piles, I learned. Luckily my ears know the sound of silver. It didn't take me long to look at each coin.
