Can someone clue me in as to why my coin sold this high?

Dumb newbie collector here. What the heck happened? I've sold MS 69 1990 silver eagles on GC before, but for nowhere near $500. Is this an error coin or something?

No clue, would take 2 or more interested bidders though.

Money laundering, maybe? I guess I should shut up and stop looking a gift horse in the mouth.
It only takes two Registry set newbies to bid it up to get those coveted points.
It's their money and they're having fun no matter what the cost is.....is a likely scenario.

How would it be money laundering if you are the consignor?

I could only assume someone thought it has a shot at 70 or was a good candidate for a shake-n-bake.

I was being facetious. Sorry.
Huh. I'd no idea. Thanks!
Sometimes auction results (both high and low) defy explanation.

Obviously, it's a label error. The TPGS left "First strike" off the label!
No shot at a 70 after a cursory look. Shake-n-Bake a possibility, but two people thinking that? I guess keep the pictures of the coin and look at toners that come up in the next few months to see if you can match the marks with those on this one.

I think its when they inject gasses into the holder to get a nice artificial toner that otherwise would never get slabbed?
There is no explanation needed, it is perfectly obvious: Two or more buyers had decided in their head, " I gotta have this coin". When I see a coin I really want, I just bid until I own it.

I agree, probably not a 70 in the future. But when I enlarge the images on my 15" screen it is a really strong 69. This is not a 69 with notable scuffs or blemishes. It is a 69+ imo.
This one sold yesterday for a much better price:

??? Mine sold for $562.50 last night with the buyer's premium. Are you looking at the one with the auction ending on 5/5, perhaps?
Never look a gift horse in the mouth. True more than 2,000 years ago, still true today, true more than 2,000 years from now.

Amen. I only asked because I'm still new to the hobby and wondered it the coin might have something special about it, especially since I consigned an entire mint tube without looking at the individual coins. Dumb move in retrospect.
Good question, it has a milk spot on lower left obverse.
If that coin was pulled directly from a bullion mint tube then there is something special about it. Most ASEs won't look close to that good coming out of a tube.
Unlikely but true. Here's the very photo I sent to Andy Wedding, and the top coin leaves a lot to be desired.
I agree the cat did it probably getting even for an empty food bowl
Thanks for the explanation, did not know that was a "thing."
A couple folks obviously wanted to take the shot at the 70 upgrade. GS wholesale bid from either major service is $1900. I predict you'll see this in someone else's holder soon (sans spot).

This thread has been quite an education. Before I submit another tube I'll give them a quick dip.
Yeah thats a shot 70 kinda coin. It's problems are... fixable.
