Who was the forum member that sold the extenders for PCGS Boxes

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 9,967 ✭✭✭✭✭

I purchased some when he first offered them, but cannot recall or find his name. They allowed NGC slabs that were too tall for the boxes to fit. Any ideas?

Do you mean the lid on the box is taller?

I don't recall seeing these. You said you purchased some from a member here? Are they custom made or does PCGS sell them?

eBay seller also offers a "universal" lid. Appears to be taller, and would be a substitute for the PCGS lid + adapter.

Forget it. I can buy an entire generic box that holds ALL the TPG'er holders for less the 8 bucks.

My point being, you don't need some type of extender. If you're willing and don't mind having a generic box that holds ALL TPG'er slabs, why do you need to pay more for an extender? Plus, the extender you linked to this guy made looks like crap!

No idea why the OP wants the extender, as opposed to a generic box. All I know is that he purchased some extenders in the past, and wants some more. So, they must be 'working' for him.

I assume the OP was aware of the generic boxes before this thread. If not, he is aware of them now.

I certainly could have been wrong about the identity of the initial source. Notwithstanding, if he is still interested, I hope that the OP is able to connect with the correct party. :)

Why buy generic when I already have a dozen or more PCGS boxes and a couple of other brands? The extenders I bought have worked fine, but did not plan on buying more NGC holders, but that didn't work out to well. lol When hunting a coin you need, holder is 2nd to quality. I also have a dozen, or more of the adapters for the soapbox ANACS holders.

ever think of doing a tall lid? though i guess the lids would be more expensive to ship.

I've thought about it, and actually made a longer extender to hold cardboard 2*2 that haven't been folded yet. I could make a taller lid but it's hard to maintain the look of the original box lid so I opted for the extender. I also use them because they raise the lid enough to store plastic coin rolls upright. Shipping wouldn't be terribly much more, the plastic weighs almost nothing for the small amount needed, but if there is interest I could certainly create a new lid as a test and see what it looks like.

On the topic of 3D printed items, has anyone attempted to design the outer ring for rattlers-- those found on doilies?

Some guy sells them on eBay, I personally haven't made any as I don't own any rattlers to get measurements, but I certainly could make them.

PCGS boxes are only 4.50, plus I have a bunch from sending in coins, so there are reasons other than needing to see the lettering. And at least CAC holders fit in the few NGC boxes that I got back from some grading there.

  • Sorry, I wasn't referring to those. My understanding is that doily holders are essentially rattlers with an outer frame/ring surrounding the slab body.

3D printing something clear is extremely difficult if not impossible with standard PLA filament because each layer is deposited one layer at a time. You really need an injection molded piece of plastic and getting a mold made is stupidly expensive. I was quoted $10k for a mold of a simple 3D printed design where I had the entire AutoCAD file all designed, etc..

  • BStrauss3BStrauss3 Posts: 3,402 ✭✭✭✭✭

There is also resin printing (FDM) that can print clear, but has its own set of issues.

@Chattermonkey - the ring on the rattlers was a short-term solution when the counterfeit rattlers were discovered. This version of the PCGS shell was replaced with one where the "ring" is integral to the shell.

I just sent Heritage an MS64RB 1909-SVDB rattler that would make a great template. ;)

Lol, that's not my idea of cheap, I have a bid on a common mercury dime now. My 09s vdb was cracked out of anacs xf45 holder for my dansco. I'm missing 7 coins from my US cents collection, I have all the Lincoln's, missing 2 ihc, and 5 large cents. Mostly circulated until about 1930, then bu after that.

I bought a cheapo rattler as an example and came up with this beauty. I know it's not exactly what you referring to with the doilies, but it fits very snug around the rattler, and allows it to fit perfectly in a modern box. If anyone is interested let me know, I might put these on eBay, as I saw the other guys adapters have sold several hundred of them. Can make them in any color, the rattler does not fall out of the frame but can be removed. One other possibility is embossing the date/mintmark/denomination on the top so you can identify the coin whole it's in the box. I'm testing a version of that now and should know if it's doable in next couple of hours.

Here is an embossed version, it turned out OK. Then I carefully hit the embossed date/denomination with a sharpie.
