Franchise QB

Seems like an appropriate topic given the draft was last night. What is everyone's definition of a "franchise quarterback"? Is it someone that starts for X number of years? If so, how many? Or is it just an undefinable term that people like to throw around?

I look at it as the top QBs in the game; Brady, Peyton Manning, Brees, Rogers, Mahomes, big Ben. Guys who are around for years and have success.
Our departed QB Kirk was not quite what I would consider a "franchise" guy, nor do I think Dak Prescott is.
Several other really good QBs out there who need to play at a high level for a little longer to be looked at as franchise guys.
A QB whose NFL franchise depends on him winning. Or tickets don't sell, and hot dogs & beer don't get sold.
A franchise QB sits on the bench and learns for a good 1-2 years before getting his shot
It's a pretty simple concept, a QB who leads the team and the offense to win the division and be a legit contender in the playoffs
I think there are many good explanations. Another I would offer is a QB which a franchise builds around so as to maximize that quarterback’s specific talents.
Imo, its a QB who is around for at least two contracts (rookie then 2nd deal) who you build your offense around his strengths & weaknesses.

"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
What about him? I heard he actually makes delicious pannenkoeken but that’s all I know.
He's one I think needs to do it a bit longer and a bit better.
Certainly has been great during regular season for the last several years.
A franchise quarterback is not easy to find.
I think you need to play 170 games & participate in multiple pro bowls and playoff games.
In other words, it's a 10-year + player.

So, Mahomes is not yet a "franchise QB"?
I think he qualifies.
Thank you JoeBanzai - that confirms what I was thinking. That the term "franchise quarterback" is thrown around yet no one knows exactly what it is. And everyone has a different definition.
I'd like to know why the word "franchise" is only tagged to the QB position. Was Joe Thomas a franchise Tackle?? Was Barry Sanders a franchise RB?? Was Deion Sanders a franchise DB?? Is Travis Kelce a franchise TE??
My answer to all those is yes.
I think the "franchise tag" is just a word/phrase the media invented to describe all the hoopla that surrounds each team looking for a QB every draft. Looking around the NFL there are quite a large number of guys who fit the definition, it only depends on who is doing the defining. Off the top of my head, using my definition, I'd say easily more than half the NFL has their guy and maybe half of the rest have a guy they think can be that guy.
In a strange way many teams shoot themselves in the foot because they use so much capital looking for the "franchise QB" that they cheat the rest of the team and miss talent. It almost seems like the entire NFL is obsessed with finding a franchise QB and pay less attention to winning, they think of that after they have their guy. The team I think that did it right most recently is the Houston Texans. Take a look at the team they built with the capital from the Watson trade. They got rid of Watson in a derby that sucked in the Browns looking for the "franchise" guy and built a solid offense because of it.
A healthy Houston will be trouble this season.
