Looking for info on People's Bank of China mint set

I apologize in advance if this is one of those, "are my worthless coins really worth a lot?" posts but my knowledge of foreign coins is pretty much non-existent. I received this 1980 People's Bank of China set of uncirculated coins and I couldn't find very much information at all on it aside from what was information was provided with the set and that they seem to be selling for $700+ on both eBay and Heritage Auctions if what I have is indeed the same thing.

Does anyone on this forum have any more information on these coins that they could share? I'm especially curious to know the mintage level since the prices that these are commanding are way north of what I would have expected (definitely more than a 1980 uncirculated US Mint set lol).

Thanks!

That’s a very good question. I want to know that too. It seems to me all of them are regular circulation coins put together. Unless I missed something I don’t even want to pay $10 for it.

I did some research, the 5 Cents 1979, 1980 and 1981 are not many out there because they used for the set. That's reason it sold that much I guess. However, I can't find exactly how many out but I guess it still has a lot out there. 1979 and 1981 5 Cents worth more than 1980.

The market has begun to cool on these, along with much of Chinese in general, but it is still a set that generally brings $700-$1,000 at auction, assuming that there aren't spotting/haziness/PVC issues with the coins. These sets could bring $1,000-$2,000 or more a few years ago, but the Chinese market has finally stopped going ballistic.

Thanks! I actually had this up on eBay on Saturday asking $975 and had an offer for $880 after a couple of hours but then the boss(wife) got mad when I told her about it and requested(told) me to pull the listing lol. She doesn't ever like selling anything unless we have multiples of the same thing but I'm perfectly fine with pitching something that is outside my realm of collecting. It's still hard to believe that this was just given away as a freebie.

Are there any varieties that are harder to find such as the blue vs black covering or the specifications written in English vs Mandarin?

@jeffas1974 please tell your wife to take the money and run (maybe counter at $900)! Leave some meat on the bone for the next guy (assuming you are net positive on the deal).

Put the funds into something the two of you care about and call it done. You’ll be happier.
