Maybe a Texas token of some sort?

Odd piece. There's a lot there that makes me think it's a fantasy piece. I don't recognize it though.

It is not in the tokens catalog at:

I agree that it is a fantasy piece.

First of all, I know nothing about this piece. Never seen it.
That said, the token engraving art was highly advanced by 1887, and it is silly to think that a high denomination token would have been made so crudely that late.
That leaves “fantasy” as the likely answer, perhaps something made to sell to tourists. The san-serif lettering looks 20th century, yet the design screams early 19th century if not earlier.
IF it is a 20th century fantasy , I must give the maker an A for Antiquing. However, until we find another, we KNOW nothing.

I'd guess it's "real" but not in the sense that it was useful for much.

This was a terrible time after a hot summer there was a bad blizzard. Without adequate food supplies for the cattle most of them starved to death or died of exposure ruining the economy.

I'd bet this token was some sort of emergency issue dating to the spring of '88.

Apparently, the answer, at least for now, is "no".

The 1838? date on the other side from the 1887 date is interesting, too. No location and no issuer make this one a tough maverick.
