"Hello there. I would like to sell these baseball cards. They belonged to my late ex husband. He had so many more but someone broke into his house while he was in the hospital and pretty much took everything that wasn't locked up. Was really sad because nothing was ever recovered. Anyway, Ray did not have much family left so it has been up to me to come down here and pack up his house and figure out what to do with everything. The cards are all in good condition. There are 330 in the album and I also have some loose ones in plastic which I'm selling separately. I figured I would go to ebay to get a idea of what they sell for and came up with $300 for the binder or $250 for the loose cards or $450 for both or best offer. I'm willing to meet local somewhere as long as it's a public place like. Police station or Shopping center. My name is Clara and I can be reached at"

That's kind of a vague description. They never say what the cards are they are selling.

  • 80sOPC80sOPC Posts: 1,353 ✭✭✭✭✭

If I was close I’d be all over that, she wants to meet in public to do a cash deal and has pics of all the cards. Sure she may get a kick out of standing people up, other then that not sure what the scam is.

I find it odd that Clara prices the binder and loose cards, but no mention of the 21 graded cards pictured. For a novice searching eBay, wouldn't those be the easiest to assign a value?

  • 80sOPC80sOPC Posts: 1,353 ✭✭✭✭✭

I still don’t see what the scam here is. Worst case scenario she gets kicks out of setting up meetings and no shows.

Has anyone actually contacted her to arrange to meet? Why is everyone so scared of possibly being burned they won’t even take a chance? I would have pinged her last night if in ATL - deals like this happen all the time. This hobby is full of scams but not everything that sells below retail price is a scam, a wife wanting to get rid of her husband’s cards for a fraction of their worth is hardly a stretch.

The 21 loose cards are the graded ones shown. Strange is Clara checked Ebay to come up with a price of $250 for those. The 53 Mays alone in PSA 1 is ~ $1400. Hard to believe the listing was posted 8 days ago and still active.

My main take-away is that Clara has very manly hands. (2nd picture)

In the first picture there is a dated name 'Carla' but the add states Clara. (1st picture) In this same picture it's very blurry and you cannot make out the cert IDs. I don't know if that's intentional or not.

I wouldn't bother with this one myself. If I thought it was legitimate I might contact and ask for the cert numbers or a higher resolution image of them where the cert IDs are discernable.

On the other side... Carla/Clara did mention that Ray was her late ex-husband so maybe she wants to sell them for next to nothing to send a message or fulfill a vengeful promise!

Had a craigslist buy about 8 years ago that had crazy back story to it, and turned out to be a nice score. The craigslist post showed two old suitcases of cards scattered in them for $100. The picture showed commons mostly from the mid-70's with a couple 50's and 60's mixed in. No stars were showing in the suitcases. I would check craigslist locally for me (Raleigh area), and South Florida where my mom was living before she moved up my way. I really shouldn't have sent my mom and uncle on this wild goose chase, but I had a hunch on the lot for some reason. They drove an hour to Wellington, ended up in a very nice gated community, and I called them about the contents. Sure enough there were plenty of stars in the suitcases. The back story was their son-in-law divorced their daughter, and left the cards. Probably more to the story, but all I know is once in a blue moon craigslist or facebook marketplace stuff works out. Cards were mostly VG condition. The Schmidt rookie graded a 3. Here are a sample of the stars. There were a lot more besides this. Good luck if you go to purchase the cards!

Bingo, this shit happens all the time but this forum is convinced everything is a scam.

While the above CL ad may be a scam, no one has explained what the scam actually is.

I'll give you the $450 for both if you go buy them. Bring something to swat away Clara's big meaty hands though in case she gets frisky.

Now. There's a difference between knowing something and thinking something, but here's why I don't consider this likely to be legitimate.

The first picture has 'April 14 Carla' written on it. In the note, they say their name is Clara. It's rare for people to spell their names incorrectly, and more rare when the rest of the text is without errors. I also question the reason for the back-story other than to drip out the "I don't know what I'm doing, but I have heard of eBay, I just don't know how numbers work.".

    What is the scam?

While they say they are willing to meet in person at a police station or shopping mall, it's very likely that if you try to coordinate a meeting at a police station.. they will work to redirect you to a public place where they are able to rob you and get away without issue. Or they will agree to meet at the station and at the last minute come up with some excuse like "my car tires turned into sausages and I was hungry... can you meet me behind fuddruckers?". Once someone is invested, it's easy to switch.

Maybe it's not a scam, because sometimes you get a banger of a deal on Craigslist...

    Bingo.

Sorry to say in this day and age, to quote from the movie Casablanca, "Life is cheap." Not only will you lose your money, and everything in your wallet, credit cards, etc, they might not want any witnesses.

An elaborate card scheme to rob you for 400 bucks? And I see SteveK thinks they might murder you.

Listen it may be a scam, but I doubt THAT is the angle. A murderous thief using mid grade vintage cards to lure middle class collectors out of their basements - the perfect foil!

Come on guys, we can’t be that scared of the world around us. This may be a scam, and it may be a deal, but you guys have some pretty wild imaginations.

I think it’s just one of those “beware” and “error on the side of scam” situations.

Just know that if anyone asks you to meet behind Fuddruckers that you’ve fallen into my trap.

Murders and muggings have happened before a number of times with Craigslist transactions. That is a fact. Why do you think the seller mentioned the police station?

It's not just the "400 bucks", i already mentioned the credit cards. The thieves could also steal your car, and do other things which I'm not going to elaborate.

Could be a scam, for sure. May not be. I’m a devout scour-er of FBMP and have found two incredible (to me) finds in the past 5 years. One involved t205 and t206’s that I’m sure I have posted here before. Happy to post a summary if anybody is interested, or if I didn’t. These finds ARE out there, but are incredibly rare and you have to get lucky to be first in line.

The listing is still active after 9 days. Something doesn't add up to legitimacy.
