Show report and pickups from the Pekin, IL coin show
I was a little late getting out this morning for the local (quarterly, I think) coin show, I was moving pretty slow this morning as I hadn't slept that well. I got to the venue at about 11 for the show which goes from 9-3. More or less the usual dealers with the usual type of material, always fun to browse though. Of note, one dealer, who I didn't really have a chance to talk with, had a very nice 1884-S Morgan in an OGH AU58 holder, had a semi-PL look to it too. Sticker price on that one was $3900 which was a little out of my budget for today . There were a few dealers who seemed to have a decent selection of bust halves, some of them appeared very nice but I just don't know enough about them to make purchasing decisions at a show. I should learn that series a bit. Out of the 30 or so tables I only really stopped at a handful of them, partly because I had headache that seemed to be getting worse, but also because a lot of the inventory I was familiar with from previous shows. I did give them all at least a quick look-over.
I usually go to a show without a real direction or focus, I go more looking for anything that appeals to me and that usually works out pretty decent.
Now to the purchases.
This one's not going to be for everyone. A crusty-looking 49-S Franklin, PCGS 64. Nice luster, I just liked it.
A couple of Kennedy Halves. The 70-D has a nice look and is graded NGC 64*, obverse is PL, reverse is not.
The 1965 SMS is a PCGS 67 blue holder, I like this one a lot.
A 71-S Ike, PCGS 66 OGH. Again just a coin I liked and think it's pretty solid for 66 on an issue that is frequently of lacking quality.
A couple of raw quarters for the Dansco album. Pretty sure that spot will come off the 45.
I purchased this 43-S cent for a couple of reasons. It's better than the one I have in my 7070 album, the other reason is as an example for my father in law, who's father saved "several rolls" of these back in the 40's. The goal here is to not get his hopes up for finding a treasure and to specifically show that a nice one can be picked up for a few dollars. (There might be more on this topic later, hopefully)
A couple of Morgans, both MS64 that I took a liking to. Again the toning here might not be for everyone.
The most expensive coin of the day, this 1829 Bust Dime, Medium 10C. NGC 45. This coin will probably end up in my 7070 album.
Lastly, a foreign coin that I know nothing about but thought it was neat.
India "One Quarter Anna" 1940. I think it looks a lot like a Canadian large cent, which makes sense.
