Probably behind a paywall. In short, American's throw away $68m in change every year. At least one company makes a profit by recovered tossed change.

    Yeah, that’s been true for some time. And also change left in vehicles. I’ve read that it’s a vector for modern counterfeits, too, since (not sure if it is still true) the mint didn’t require a whole coin in order to reimburse for face value.

    As a teenager back in the 1970's, I spent some time scrapping out junk cars. All of the silver and other old coins I recovered from under carpets and what-not really gave a boost to my burgeoning (but under-funded) coin collecting interests.
