The NBA has banned Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter for life due to gambling!!

MaywoodMaywood Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭✭✭

WOW!! Banned for life because he bet on NBS games. According to the report I read an NBA investigation found Porter “violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games.”

Maywood.

They did the right thing, imo. Gotta make an example of him so this hopefully doesn't happen again and it probably will happen again.

Reminds me of the NCAA BB scandal with point shaving years ago.

Why this guy would get involved in anything like this is moronic on a biblical scale

The MLB could learn a thing or two here.

The substantial truth doctrine is an important defense in defamation law that allows individuals to avoid liability if the gist of their statement was true.

The ex-Mafia captain Michael Franzese is featured on quite a number of YouTube videos. To me the videos are very entertaining. On one video, Franzese explains in detain how the mob sets up a sports player to rig games. College players are perhaps their favorite marks.

Just a hunch but I would guess that this guy probably did this in college as well, but just didn't get caught.

Hey! No. I agree with you here. I'm not entirely sure what 'a biblical scale' means though, so I'm assuming it means 'big time oopsy'.

i never implicitly trusted the NBA again after watching G6 of the Western Conference finals between the Lakers and Kings over 20 years ago. most blatantly rigged contest i've ever seen in any sport since i've been alive. i'll never forget toward the end of that game when LA was nearing extinction -- Kobe Bryant almost broke Mike Bibby's jaw and the next thing you know, he (Kobe) was at the charity stripe shooting 2. the Lakers were awarded 27 such shots in the 4th Q of that game.

    27 free throws.

    one quarter.

    one team.

    it was truly disgusting.

of course they won that game, won game 7, won the Finals, and it was a ratings explosion. had the Kings won that Game 6 and moved on as they rightfully deserved to, the NBA would have been eating off the dollar menu at McDonald's.

since that time, pro hoops has done nothing to earn my trust. there have been corrupt refs and now discreditable players are coming to light. with the proliferation of gambling, i can almost guarantee that there's someone, somewhere pulling a Jontay Porter on a nightly basis.

i personally like the NBA, but it is a dirty ass sport and has been for a long time

    "proliferation of gambling"

I don't follow European sports at all, except to sometimes see a headline about it from the sports websites I follow. But gambling scandals are like a cottage industry over there. The obvious being soccer because it is so huge there. But surprisingly, from what I recall, tennis has had some of the worst gambling scandals.

Gambling is so prevalent there, it wouldn't surprise me if their grade schools teach courses in techniques on how to be a better gambler. 😆

If you're referring to maths... it surprises me more that our grade schools don't teach that! Ha!

Steve Wynn once said casinos are for those with bad math. 💸

Tough month for Michael Porter Jr.

Coban Porter, the younger brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr., was sentenced Friday to six years in prison for a drunken driving crash that killed a woman in Colorado last year.
