1869 IHC obv surface artifact

Namvet69Namvet69 Posts: 8,977 ✭✭✭✭✭

Working on my IHC type set book and acquired a 69 and 77 which leaves me 5 to go. These 2 were languishing in a totally beat up cardboard coin board. The 69 has a small depression in the obv exergue next to the O in OF. Do we think it's a small strike thru grease or a planchet flaw? Pics are attached and comments are welcomed.
Peace Roy

I am ready to be schooled about them both. Carry on with my lesson

The fabric of the surfaces doesn't look right, lots of weak/mushy/missing detail, and lots of tooling marks (especially on the reverses). Also, on the 1877, the face detail on the Indian doesn't look right, like it wasn't even copied from an actual coin.

Sorry, but the 77 is definitely a counterfeit. The bottom feather should be between I and C not as yours is.

Just to be clear, the 1869 is definitely counterfeit, as well. All of the detail is unnaturally shallow, with massive loss of detail on the denticles, and lots of little pits and tooling marks on the reverse. And the date is funky.

And this is why I need this braintrust. I'm noticing these details now. Thanks all for your observations.

    Both are fake for sure.

@IkesT & @jesbroken have described the issues perfectly. I’ll add as far as the 1877’s, there’s a clash mark on all of them (except one) above the O in ONE on the rev. The 1877 you have is actually a poor example of a counterfeit for the reasons given. The 1869 is a bit better but still fairly obvious.

Look at the numbers relative to real ones.

Grateful for all the info. I flew a little too close to the sun.

Date placement is wrong on the 77 plus the feathers.
