With only 80 graded in all grades at PCGS this 1840 Small/Large 18 is the scarcest LC in my Late Date with Major Varieties set . A VF25 brought $725 recently....this VG10 cost considerably less and looks much better in hand....tho that's not saying much. She will do for now. What coin have you settled for due to scarcity and price?

For now it works, your not totally married either. Happy hunting 👍
Yours is a true beauty compared to my 1804 Poor Details:
Smitten with DBLCs.
Sometimes, compromises have to be made to own the coins we seek!
It would be great if you'd add to your thread headline (1840 Large Cent). Just a suggestion.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
And sometimes, idiocy tilts the scale.

It has seen better days.

Nice idea for a thread. I haven't settled for any coins due to price but scarcity is a different story.
I wish I could compromise to buy the key (75-P) for my set but it essentially doesn't exist. The other key (78-CC) is original but not gorgeous.
The still extraordinarily tough 73-P, 74-P, and 76-P are also awaiting upgrades.
I really like my 73-CC but would upgrade if the opportunity existed; I've seen one come available in the last 2 years and it would have been a downgrade. I can keep going for several more spots in my set but I guess that gets the point across. I have a healthy budget for my set and can afford any coin in census condition but the opportunity rarely presents itself.

I've posted this on different threads, but it's appropriate here too... Early Half Cents are quite difficult to find nice. I bought this "details" coin because I felt the scratch was not in a prime focal area and the rest of the coin looked pleasing for the grade. Over 120k were minted but ~200 survive in all grades. It was also purchased for less than half of a similarly graded coin without the scratch!

I’m into it for <P1 money, so it works:
