It’s with great sorrow that I make this post to all of Jerry’s fans. Today, April 7, 2024 at 4:29pm, I lost our beloved catcher, Jerry Grote, to Respiratory Failure after a heart procedure. He gave a hard fight to the very end as we all expected he would. He is now home with Jesus. Thank you for all the memories and support. More details of arrangements to follow.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Grote

My favorite Mets player (along with Tom Terrific) growing up in Queens during the 1970s. Fantastic defensive catcher and a key member of the 1969 World Series Championship team. RIP.

😢 A very sad day. Like Tim, I too was a huge Mets fan growing up in Brooklyn in the seventies.
My brother and I were lucky enough to meet Jerry at a promotional appearance in 1976 and he was very nice. A Mets stalwart for twelve years. RIP.
That's a great photo, Dave!

Those who aren’t Met fans may not have heard this story…Jerry almost didn’t make it to adolescence!
“Grote was raised in San Antonio, Texas. When he was ten years old, he and his family were caught in an F-4 tornado. His mother, father and two sisters made it to safety, however, he lost his grandmother in the storm.”
Turns out Jerry’s house was actually carried through the air Wizard of Oz style. 😳

RIP.
Johnny Bench once said of Jerry Grote, "If Grote and I were on the same team, I would be playing third base." That's quite high praise from the GOAT catcher.
The Mets won their first World Series in 1969. I'm sure most Mets fans would agree that probably wouldn't have happened without Jerry Grote behind home plate.
RIP
A great catcher and by all accounts a great guy.
RIP
high praise indeed.
