Still weighed 5g. I'm assuming that it was polished but wasn't really sure.

Possibly copper plated. This can even happen with old dip.
By looking at the obverse, I would guess acid treated. Of course I've never acid treated a nickel so I wouldn't know what the results would look like.

First thought is a metal detector find...enviornmental damage.

That was my first thought based on the porous surfaces and the fact that nickels are 75% copper. Spend it.

Have seen many like that, it is environmental damage.
Hard to say exactly what kind though.
Looks like it could have been a ground recovery piece gotten by metal detector??? In any case... 5 cents...
