The Moby Dick of cuds....the Harpooned Whale 1831 Large Cent!

This is the most well known cud of the entire Middle Date Large Cent series. I was able to pick up this nice example yesterday.

This is an example of the terminal state of the cud. Not my coin.

I remember seeing one at our local monthly show in a tray of large cents at a dealer table some years ago for $25.
I made a mental note to research it, which I did after I got home, and decided I needed to get it. But at the next show it was gone!

I kinda like this four star cud. Percentage wise it is larger than the cent.

    Both are still very neat!

There are some great bust quarter and draped bust half cuds. Come on folks, let’s see them!

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

    Pretty cool alright B)

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
