Recently I was asked if I could identify this item.
Unfortunately, I can not. But perhaps another forum member can help?
The item was found amongst old items from “some” war.??
It contains 43 Asian coins and is definitely handmade. Maybe Chinese coins?
The coins are extremely tight positioned around a metal rod and held together with string.
This took a lot of time and patience.
Made perhaps by a POW? Or a soldier in any of the wars in Asia?
Hopefully, someone can help here.
Thank you all.
H.

Looks like someone attempted to create a decorative sword; not that unusual. As for the coins, they appear to have been minted, not cast, during the reign of the Guang Xu emperor; 1875 - 1908.

"Coin swords" are a fairly standard charm in western Feng Shui and in the Oriental traditions that Feng Shui derives from - though this one is using smaller machine-struck cash coins, and is more like a "coin dagger" rather than a "sword". They even have their own Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coin-sword

Red string is also the conventional thread to use to create lucky charms from cash coins.

Not made by a soldier, but perhaps bought by them as a souvenir, without really knowing or caring about the traditional meaning and use of such objects.

Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.
