Who likes Spanish colonial coins?

I long overlooked Spanish New World coins. My first purchase is this 8 Escudos. I was surprised that many of these large coins are modestly priced compared to their bullion content.
This 1816 example would have been minted during the Spanish monarchy's short-lived reconquest of their northern South America colonies (1815-1819).

Many gems in Latin American coinage. Tons of rare coins that are mostly affordable. If they were US coins most of us could not afford such rarities or at least a lot less of them.

By the way your coin is from Colombia per the mintmark.

Here is a coin from Peru (1 real) I purchased last month from a fellow forum member. This is one of my favourite per Yonaka's book 4 known or Rarity 2 (likely more like 10-20 known based on long term members here). Still a major rarity that I am happy the own. Yonaka states only 424 were minted:

PillarDollarCollector, thanks for posting the 1752 1 Real Peru. I had no idea such low mintage Spanish colonial issues existed. My guess is that most of these coins were heavily circulated and are rare in any condition.

If you are interested in collecting Latin American coins there are books on many areas but also no books on some areas. Just ask I will respond or others will here. Latin American coins are much rarer than most US coins. You can wait long long periods even for a coin that cost a few hundred dollars. The most common are the 8 reales bu then again many of them are rare to unique especially the Cap & Rays from 1823-1897.
As for the mintage of my 1752 that is not the norm there are many with low mintage's don't get me wrong but most are much higher than that (ex: in the series I collect 1751-1772 1 real Peru most have mintage's of over 50 000 or more).
This is a great book to start with:

Welcome to the exciting and addicting world of collecting Spanish Colonials. There are quite a few of us on this board, although most are focused on silver.
Hard to pick a favorite from my collection, so here are 3 from different rulers:
Carlos III
Carlos IV
Ferdinand VII

A couple references I find useful.
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
I've been collecting Spanish and Spanish Colonial gold lately. Here's a link to some of them:
