Anybody in here collect / invest in Vatican Coins?

Vatican coins are deader than a doornail. I can’t even sell them in Mexico, a catholic country.

The euro coins from Vatican and San Marino are popular, in Europe at least; the NCLT and older pre-euro stuff, perhaps less so.

There always seems to be someone who thinks what they like should be worth a lot more. Everything can't become a lot more valuable (whether due to some arbitrary number on a TPG label or otherwise) or else most collectors wouldn't be able to afford (hardly) anything they actually want to buy.

I'm not sure how to post a link here but have a look on MA Coins or the CGB website.

    There's a lovely NGC MS64 for sale. :)

    Peace

Not a collector of Vatican coins…however I acquired this set with a lot of other(mostly US) coins. I’m actually not that knowledgeable on this set. Additional Information would be appreciated

I've picked up dozens on Vatican mint sets and parts over the last 50 years because they were so cheap. I can't believe these new prices.

There was a Vatican coin which appeared in the 1982 television program "Hart to Hart" in the episode titled "To Coin a Hart".

It was used to portray a fictional unique "Belleza Chalice" gold coin.

Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers appear as Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, a wealthy married couple who act as amateur detectives to solve various crimes.

The coin is portrayed by a Vatican 2 Lire coin dated 1942. The Vatican coin was altered to add the figure of a chalice and to remove the value and date. It was then gilded or painted gold. Later a gilded British 1961 large penny appears as the coin.

    image
    The coin in the program
The obverse shows a pair of keys and the figure of a chalice.
The reverse shows Justice holding scales.

The prop coin has been copied from a real Vatican coin of Pope Pius XII who reigned from 1939 to 1958. The Vatican minted stainless steel coins in Rome with this design from 1942 to 1946.

Later the prop coin is shown with US coins (nickels and quarters) with known diameters of 21.2 mm and 24.3 mm allowing one to calculate it's diameter to be around 29 mm which matches the size of the 2 Lire coin.

The prop coin has had the date removed but the remaining inscription "ANNO IV" points to the fourth year of Pope Pius XII or 1942.

A real Vatican 2 Lire coin from 1942:

    Obverse:
Crossed keys with Papal Crown above and shield with figure of dove below
PIVS XII PONTIFEX MAXIMUS ANNO IV (Pius XII, Chief Pontiff, Year 4)
Pope Pius XII was in office from 1939 to 1958. The fourth year of his reign is 1942.

    Reverse:
Seated robed figure of Justice holding scales and book
STATO DELLA CITTA DEL VATICANO - IVSTITIA (State of the Vatican City - Justice)

I have a Vatican proof set from 1969. Found it on EBay surprisingly cheap. Had to take it out of the smelly plastic sleeve though.
