I bought this coin at a small coin show in Denver some 15 or 20 years ago. I like the crazy re-punched date. I've gained a lot of education since then and I hadn't looked at this coin in a long time. I feel the coin is suspicious. It has real grainy surfaces. It may be hard to see in my pictures but the grainy surface is in relief. I'm suspecting this is a fake made with spark erosion (EDM) dies. But I'm hoping I'm wrong and that it's legitimate. I'm hopeful someone here will have knowledge they'll share about this piece. I might be able to get some closer up pictures if needed. Opinions appreciated. Thanks

Yes, it's genuine.

Everything shoddy that you are seeing on this coin is typical for this poorly made issue. You are right to question it based on appearance but it's good. Uneven rims, grainy surface and repunching are all typical for this gold coin.

dsalesco: I just weighed it. My gram scale is a cheap one made for cooking and only reads in full grams. But it shows 8 grams so it's certainly in the ballpark.
