What is going on with this 1969 proof penny?

The reverse looks totally fine but the obverse has weird spots on it, like it has chicken pox 🧐
Any thoughts?

Do you mean the reverse has spots or is the obverse just so darn hideous that you don't want to harm anyone who looks at it?
If you mean the reverse, then it appears to simply have negative toning.

It's just got spots. These things happen.

Stored in a hostile environment.
Can I send this coin to PCGS to be restored or is there no hope for this kind of thing?
You can pay for restoration and certification, but why would you pay $50+ to certify a $1 coin?

I guess over a lot of years strange things happen lol
It's resting comfortably.
You can take your gloves off.
Yea maybe, it’s just a habit I have when handling coins, to always wear cotton gloves ❤️
After doing a little reading, turns out copper coins had a lot impurities in them, which lead to strange surfaces sometimes —
Has anyone seen a coin like this?
Yes, we have seen lots of spotted copper.

Looks like a question for Mr. Eli Whitney or the Smurfs.

Some planchets have a woodgrain look.

Talking, while facing a copper coin can-over time result in spittle spots which may take years to appear.
Perhaps we should be wearing masks, along with those gloves, when handling red copper?

Love the woodgrain toning on the early wheaties....
Do you have a reason to believe this coin is worth more than $1?
Why would you consider spending $50-$100 to make it look better?
