A little toning experiment

maymay Posts: 1,585 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was hard boiling eggs this afternoon when I had the idea to tone some coins. So I crushed up a hard boiled egg in a bowl, heated it in the microwave, and let it sit on the vent for a while. I tried to position the lke and the proof dollar like you find in a bag, with mild success. Here is the setup:
And here are the results:

I put a Ike in there overnight, but the effectiveness of the eggs seems to drop off with time.

What do the coins smell like? I've seen graders smell coins and say "this coin smells like as." Tobacco toning has a distinct smell also.

Smells like metal. After the “Incident” I always like to smell my coins before buying them. ;)

The Olympics Proof is very interesting. Looks like the kind of tone that often ends up in straight graded holders.

    Don't encourage him! ;)

Now try it with quail eggs. Did you cover the tray to trap the off gas?

Yes, the bowl had a clip-on lid.

That IKE in the original package was worth a lot of money to the right person. After attending one of her seminars, I donated a Proof Set (horrible case of PVC but not as bad as yours) to Susan Maltby for her conservation lectures. IMO, your RARE example was the wrong coin to experiment with. :'( Nevertheless, you are the owner.

Skip is back? And what exactly is rare about a '71-S Blue Ike package?

Are you planning round two with fresh eggs?

  • Steven59Steven59 Posts: 8,695 ✭✭✭✭✭

You really only need the yolks for toning - it has the Sulphur in it. Try duck eggs if you can find them for sale - they have bigger yolks while the albumen (whites) are less than chicken eggs thus they produce more sulfur.

And if you don't like the toning you can remove it by:
    1) Crumple up a piece of aluminum foil and put it in a glass bowl
    2) Place the coin on the aluminum foil
    3) add 1TBSP (or more) of Baking Soda on top of the coin
    4) Pour boiling water over the coin until covered

That should remove the toning, then you can try again if you want.

That's what I did for my "toned" Ike above, worked like a charm.
