Thoughts on how this card got a 4 with back damage?

Don’t see how this is a 4.

It might have seen a new grader. I don't remember ever seeing that card where it looks like part of the position/team name was there, the ones I've seen had an all white box. Maybe old age has me mis-remembering. Can you send it to PSA for a review, if you paid a lot for it?

It’s on ebay and I’m looking for an affordable Sherman error card.

The guy selling it just bought it in December, for $96. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-Topps-Football-ERR-No-Team-Name-Front-58-Bill-Sherman-PSA-4-MK-Error-Card/296114151356?nordt=true&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2349526.m43663.l10137 Maybe he bought it for resale or maybe something's wrong with it.
