Is this medal abrasively cleaned?

I came across this image of a medal. I'm curious if it has been abrasively cleaned. The transition from dark to bright is just too abrupt to me...

    What is it made of?

If it's bronze then it looks suspicious, if it's pewter then not necessarily so, for example.

Depending on the material, those areas could also just have been rubbed which
would make them look brighter. Hard to tell from supplied photos.

Thank you @Greenstang. The vertical hair lines on the bottom right corner is a red flag perhaps?

Just as an example, here is a silver medal I have that is as-issued.
