New frosty nickel

Picked it up at a local show today.
This 1966 SMS nickel looks like a DCAM proof in hand under good lighting. The coin is remarkably free of marks, scratches, hits and dings that are so common on SMS coins.

Looks like a nice freaking coin!
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
Pretty amazing for an SMS example.

My cell phone photos do not show how the coin looks in hand. The devices are heavily frosted and the fields are a deep watery black mirror.
Send it in for grading, it looks very nice.

Given how strict our host currently is awarding a Cameo and a DCAM designation to 1950-1970 proof and SMS coins it would not surprise me to see this nickel grade Brilliant only.
Did you happen to send it in?
I checked PCGS DCAM population of the 3 years of SMS coins.
Cent - 3 == Nickels - 241 == Dimes - 37 == Quarters - 37 == Half Dollars -399
Not yet.
Later this year I will submit it with some other Modern coins to our host for grading.
I gave the nickel a bath to remove the toning (to better show the contrast between the devices and fields).
New photos of the nickel are attached. IMO the nickel warrants a Cameo designation. After the coin is graded I will give an update to this thread.
it sure looks ... good luck
Does look cameo.

I sent the 1966 SMS nickel to PCGS for grading. It was received on 8-19-2024. Today the coin went into Quality Assurance. It should be shipped out to me later this week.
I also sent in with the 1966 SMS nickel a 1967 SMS nickel I purchased earlier this year that looks just as good if not better than the 1966 nickel. I also sent in two 1966 SMS half dollars that are the DDO variety and that also may warrant a Cameo designation.
When the grades on this submission pop and when True View photos are available I will post them to the forum.
Here, this might help all to save time. Sorry it clipped a little.

Seem all there for a DCAM! Congratulations!
Is that a nick above STATES and between FIVE CENTS?

I do not recall if what you see is a nick.
It most likely is some sort of flaw present on/in the field of the reverse.
As far as a designation goes, I have no idea.
My personal opinion is that it should easily CAM (however a year ago I submitted nine 1965-1967 SMS nickels to PCGS for grading that all look like the 1966 nickel posted in this thread; and not a single one of the nine nickels received a CAM designation).
As far as DCAM goes, well that would be quite a surprise.
From the initial images I thought cameo, from the updated set more than likely brilliant.
I defer to your expertise. You know the designations, I don't! It's a lovely coin.

I expect the grade on the 1966 nickel to post by Friday. It will be interesting to see the results.

I have no ability to accurately determine if a given proof or SMS coin warrants a Cameo or DCAM designation.
I thought the following coins warranted a Cameo designation, but they are not Cameos and are Brilliant only.
You got robbed with those.

It doesn’t look complete to me, the reverse is lagging in frost and the hit on the obverse might hold it to PR66.
TTT again.
The grades on my submission (including the 1966 nickel) posted today. The results are:
1 1 50895347 84198 1966 5C SMS, CAM SP66CA USA
2 1 50895348 84199 1967 5C SMS, CAM SP66CA USA
3 1 50895349 146048 1966 50C SMS DDO FS-104, CAM SP66CA USA
4 1 50895350 146048 1966 50C SMS DDO FS-104, CAM SP66CA USA
Overall I am pleased with the results, especially with the two half dollar varieties receiving a Cameo designation.
I will post True View photos when they are available.
So it seems that your initial pictures, to me, are more representative of what the coin looks like. In the second set of pictures the reverse looks almost devoid of frost, probably the angle of the lighting. I know in the past I have rinsed heavily frosted coins only to learn that the "frost" was actually haze that the process removed.
Maywood.
You are correct. The second set of photos did not show the reverse frost very well. Those photos were taken with an older cell phone. I replaced that phone last month with an IPhone 15. My new cell phone takes much better quality photos.
I was hoping that the 1966 nickel would receive a Cameo designation (as I said in my OP under good lighting it looks DCAM), but my prior experience led me to assume that it would not receive any designation. Doing so led me to be pleasantly surprised today when the grade popped.
I have also removed haze from coins only to see what I thought was frosted devices was merely a hazed over brilliant coin.
My worst experience was a very attractively toned 1962 Proof Nickel. It had lovely blue/pink tone on both sides from the Mint Cello that I cut it out of, but it also showed what appeared to be really strong frost on both sides. I had it for several years, would look at it occasionally and think..............and think..............and think. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore, I figured I'd lose the color but I was convinced I'd have a clean DCAM.
I lost the tone and ended up with a brilliant coin, no frost whatsoever!! I knew it as soon as it entered the solution.
Maywood.
I had a similar experience with a 1962 Proof Nickel. It was gorgeously toned and appeared to be a DCAM. I held onto it for years and like you wanted a DCAM. I removed the toning and found the nickel was, at best, lightly frosted and no where near a DCAM or even a Cameo.
I still kick myself for that bone head decision.
Congrats! That is a great submission and result!
Here is a True View photo of the 1967 SP66CAM nickel. It just popped.
The quality of the photo is great.
