It's been over a year so I took some updated group shots of my core collection

DelawareDoonsDelawareDoons Posts: 3,413 ✭✭✭✭✭

I mostly collect old holders, really anything that catches my eye, with a long-term goal of assembling a type set. New acquisitions have really slowed down for several reasons but they do trickle in.

Fatties

Duplicate Fatties (And the PL Morgan run)

Proof Frankins

OGH

Rattlers (The trime hasn't been to CAC yet)

Duplicate Rattlers (And a Blanchard + Japan MoF gold

I am very impressed! The coins and the holders! That’s awesome!

My holdings are very humble, but I like to buy the same kind of things when I can find them.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Been a long road and still quite a ways to go before I'm happy, if ever.

Awesome coins! Congrats on putting together such a wonderful group!

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

    I love it!

Do all of your NGC fatties have intact holograms? Alternatively, are they (or some of them) the embossed logo generation? It has been my experience that some types with the embossed logo are fairly unusual to find. Regardless, they are cool!

Very nice collection! Are you a long-time collector who bought a lot of those coins when they were issued in those holders, or have you searched and acquired them more recently? Either way, it's an impressive group!

99% are intact. I hate non-intact holograms. I only accept minor damage, and then, only on much tougher types to find. I would estimate this group is 75% 4.0, 25% 3.0... and then the 6 2.0/2.1's you can see scattered throughout. Most notable 3.0 I have is probably the 75-CC 25c. I've saved quite a few holograms too, several of these came with stickers from various auction houses/dealers over the holograms.

I was born bang between the founding of PCGS and NGC, and I come from a VERY middle class background, so I definitely didn't put these away when I was a kid lol. I started casually picking these up around 2017, and began to consider the idea of doing a fatty type set in early 2019 after I acquired the 1839 dime. Shortly after that, I had a couple more interesting ones fall into my lap, and that is when I got more aggressive and really started looking for them. I had the benefit of a full-time remote position prior to the past year and change, so I could watch eBay like a hawk and scoop any old holders that weren't asking for a premium, or weren't auctioning well. Picked up quite a few that way, I'd guess 80%+, the others I've picked up off of dealers that don't care about the old holders, or occasionally paid up for one from auction or vest dealer friends.

I've owned considerably more than you see here too. I started with Morgans and Mercury dimes, and had over 60 OGH/Rattler mercs at one point. The only surviving ones from that group are the Gold CAC doily and the 40-S 66FB Gold CAC. I basically began acquiring anything that met my fairly basic standards and submitted lots of them to CAC to refine my eye and get it in-line with JA's, as much as you can via submitting coins to them at least. From there, if it failed CAC, I'd typically dump it, if it passed but wasn't something special, I'd sell it, and if it gold CACed, I'd keep it. I'd say I've made all but maybe one or two of the Gold CAC's you see in those pics. It should total 53 coins.

The rattler 3CS I think will green, but not gold, so I'll probably be stuck at 53 for a while here, unless some really neat group falls into my lap. Here's some bonus pics of that one.

    Great circular, peripheral toning.

I've been actively going after fatties and rattlers since probably about late 2018.

I have three doilies in the OGH pic. They're just scarce so they aren't a main focus for me. Like 2.0 and 2.1's, though I've lucked into a few more of those than doilies. I would have four doilies, but one was lost in the mail. :(

Not sure what is more impressive... the collection or the stack of raw gold.

    Thank you for sharing.

Needs more context as to your methods and madness.

Often the collector is as interesting as the collection.

I mean, if you have questions, I'm an open book.

The gold came from a local dealer that reached out wanting to turn and burn it after buying it that morning. I picked it up the same day. A lot of it is no longer raw. ;)
