I found this in change the other day. Is it a laminate failure? It's the size of a penny, but thick as a dime. Thanks in advance

It was probably caught in a washing machine.

Dryer coins come in many different types of damages.
A few of these look to have the same type of damage as the OP's......"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"

Really? I found older coins in my washer (and dryer) but they didn't look like that. Thanks,
Jim
Dryer
Just another shop project. Looks like someone tried to grind a pattern on it. just PMD. When CRH I have found quite a few homemade redesigns like this one. Keep it and start you own PMD collection.

I have found several in washing machines that have looked just like the one that you have. They usually fall in the gap at the bottom of the machine for the agitator. As the agitator spins the coin rolls around in the gap and gets worn down. The longer that the coin is in that gap, the worse the coin gets damaged.
Thanks for all the responses. Greatly appreciated

Not too healthy with the zinc exposed.
100% for sure washing machine coin. Zero doubt. This is exactly what happened to that coin. Got stuck in-between the drum and drum housing.
