So, I'm assuming they gave the 1st half dollar struck to his widow. Does anyone know ?

Well, I’m not sure about the dates involved but Mrs. Kennedy was shown a prototype proof at a meeting. Unbeknownst at the meeting, the Mint assumed the design was a go and was producing the proofs. Mrs. Kennedy asked for subtle changes to the hair which were made for subsequent production. The pre-approval proofs became known as the accented hair variety. If this is the actual second piece struck it would be the accented hair. The first one struck would not have been given to Mrs. Kennedy since she made the changes.
