PCGS return shipping

GotTheBugGotTheBug Posts: 1,629 ✭✭✭✭✭

If you submit coins under three different service categories does PCGS combine all of your newly-certified coins into one return shipment or do they ship them all back in separate packages? I've reached out to PCGS customer service but have not heard back from them yet.

I'm only submitting 9 coins over three different categories and return shipping for the three totals $93.00 if shipped separately.

Thanks in advance for those in the know.

each invoice will grade at different speeds and return in different packages
    - the only thing you are saving on is your shipping cost to them

is there any way you can merge your coins into 2 or 1 submission invoice?
for example I have sent moderns in as economy or regular and have bumped up or down regular and economy

you might want to wait a week or 2 to see what new quarterly special is

besides shipping there is the $10 handling fee for each submission form

Sometimes grading services are willing to hold a submission while another one gets done so they'll ship together.

PCGS will not ship the orders back to you together to save you money on shipping. Each and every order is shipped separately, and the sad part is there isn’t a way to change this. Years ago mechanical error submissions would piggyback on with other orders to cut down on the volume of shipping packages, but not now. Every order is separated.

You may need to call them and ask as soon as you see the grades post or they'll be out the door faster than you can say don't ship them yet.

From the "shipping" section of the PCGS FAQ page:

Thanks you for posting this, and to everyone else that responded as well. I'm going to have to see about doing some combinations. Hopefully I can offset increased grading costs for lesser-value coins by saving on the cost of shipping and handling. Kind of a bummer but I get it, since PCGS probably is handling thousands of coins at any one time.

Both they and NGC in past were able to combine shipments and I don't blame them for making their policies more workable with the logistics challenges.

As shipping costs rise ever higher, it would be a good investment for PCGS to investigate changing workflows to allow for combined shipments.

I think it might be a smart business move.

I can say with certainty that return shipping is a huge cost factor and has affected my submission volume.

Absolutely! I have 3 orders in and shipping with insurance is a big factor.

Assume $31 per order for shipping. Seems like they could add a fee to offset the hassle of combing shipments and both parties would benefit.

It might be worth a call to them. They have combined submissions for me in the past. It was a in person submission at a show and they marked each form to hold until all three were ready to ship but that was several years ago.

Not true. Although their official line is that they will not combine return shipping, I have been putting at the bottom of my submission forms; "OK to combine return shipments where/when practical" and they have actually done it. This is good and bad because I don't want to hassle them about it, but recently I had a submission get completed and they held it for probably a week and a half to combine with another submission. I would have preferred them to ship them separately to get the earlier sub back sooner, but I was also happy to save the shipping.

Good information. Thanks for sharing. :)

Have to admit that I am a little annoyed by this revelation. I have been dutifully complying with the "official line" (i.e., the explicit instructions on the PCGS site). Now it appears that PCGS is not adhering to their published policy, and that I might have been able to save some money on return shipping fees.

Assuming time is not a factor, I will have to try this on my next box to PCGS that includes multiple 'submissions/orders'.
